John Kevin Rizer (born November 7th, 1996) is an American professional baseball outfielder in the Baltimore Orioles organization.

Amateur career[edit]

High School Career[edit]

Rizer attended Cy-Fair High School in Cypress County, Texas near Houston where he was a three-year letterwinner. He helped guide Cy-Fair to the class 5A Region 3 semifinals as a junior hitting .330 with six home runs his senior year. He also had six home runs as a junior with a .380 average. Rizer tabbed a Perfect Game Honorable Mention All-American as a senior, named to the all-Houston area team his junior season, and received all-district honors as a junior and senior.[1]

College Career[edit]

Louisiana-Lafayette[edit]

Rizer appeared in 21 games at Louisiana-Lafayette and made one start while accumulating 14 at-bats and scoring two runs and being named to the Dean's List.[2]

Blinn-College[edit]

Rizer played one season at Blinn College, earned all-region and all-conference honors, hit .354 and ranked second on the team with 11 home runs. Rizer also collected 13 doubles and a team-leading three triples, tallied 44 RBIs, and was named to the Dean's List.[3]

Texas Christian University[edit]

Rizer played two seasons at TCU University where he played in 96 total games with all but two being in center field.[1]

Junior Year[edit]

Rizer started 34 games as part of 41 appearances on the season. He made 32 starts in center field and two as the designated hitter. Rizer was a defensive replacement in two games and a pinch hitter in five. Johnny reached base safely in 30 games and tallied a hit in 21 of his 30 hits on the season. Seven were doubles, three were triples and three were home runs totaling 13 RBIs and 24 scored runs. He had nine multi-hit games and three multi-RBI contests.

On Feb. 16 Johnny Rizer was TCU's opening day starting center fielder at Grand Canyon and suffered an injury in Game 2 of the season that sidelined him for nearly a month. Later, Rizer returned to the lineup as the designated hitter on March 16 against Minnesota. Rizer's first career hit was a double against the Golden Gophers (March 16). Rizer hit safely in all four games of the Big 12 Tournament and went 1-for-3 with three runs scored in the Tournament opener against Texas Tech. He combined for three hits in the two games against West Virginia and tripled in the Big 12 Championship game against Baylor (May 27).[1]

Senior Year[edit]

One of three Horned Frogs to have played in and started all 62 games. Every start came in center field. Johnny Rizer was one of four Frogs to finish the season with a .300+ average at .311, he ranked second on the team with 75 hits and 16 doubles and led the team with 11 home runs. He tallied 39 RBIs, 13 of which came with two outs. He stole eight bases in 13 attempts, collected a team-high 25 multi-hit games, tallied nine multi-RBI contests, recorded a hit in 44 games and reached base safely in 52.

Rizer opened the season with a seven-game hitting streak, reached safely in the first 13 games of the year, collected four hits in the MLB4 Tournament to open the season. Johnny Rizer reached base safely and tallied hits in three games in the Phillips 66 Big 12 Championships (May 22-26). He doubled and homered in the win over Oklahoma (May 23), had two hits each in the wins over Baylor (May 24) and Oklahoma State (May 25) Rizer homered and drove in three runs as part of three hits in the win over Cal in the NCAA Fayetteville Regional.

In 2019 Johnny Rizer made the 2019 NCAA Fayetteville All-Regional Team, was an All-Big 12 Honorable Mention, and an All-Big 12 2nd-team Academic.

Notably, on March 22nd, Johnny Rizer robbed a home run against the University of Texas Longhorns that placed him into a SportsCenter Top 10 spot.[4][1]

Aberdeen Ironbirds[edit]

Drafted by the Baltimore Orioles in the 7th round of the 2019 MLB June Amateur Draft from Texas Christian University (Fort Worth, TX), Johnny went into the Class A Shortseason in the New York-Penn League to the Aberdeen Ironbirds under the Baltimore Orioles organization with the number 51.[5]

  • Hit for the cycle -- only the third time for it to be done in Ironbird history -- against Staten Island at Richmond County Bank Ballpark[7]

Delmarva Shorebirds[edit]

Johnny Rizer was assigned to the Class-A team the Delmarva Shorebirds on July 24, 2019 with the number 17. In his first game he bat for .333 with 1 RBI.[5]

One of a handful of 2019 draft picks to reach the Shorebirds this season, Rizer made the largest non-marketing impact: in 36 games here, he slashed .310/1/22/.761 OPS. He finished with A .308/4/41/.821 OPS in just 260 plate appearances and played an errorless outfield.[8]
