Jolynn Joelle Chin (born December 25, 1995), known professionally as Jolynn J Chin, is a Malaysian crossover pianist.[2] Born and raised in Kuching, she began her musical journey playing the piano at a young age. She gained a following in 2018 when she released her single "Toccata". Her debut "Beyond Classical"(2019), was considered in the initial ballot in the Best Contemporary Instrumental Album category for the 62nd Grammy Awards.[3]

Early life

Jolynn J Chin was born and raised in Kuching on December 25, 1995. She is the only child in the family. Her parents sent her to music classes when she was five years old. She started performing and being on stage from the age of seven in school activities such as story-telling, singing, dancing, and playing the piano. From a young age, Jolynn J Chin loved the music of Maksim Mrvica, Vanessa-Mae, and BOND[4], and started drawing inspiration from them. She has also learnt other instruments besides piano lessons when she was young.[5]

At the age of 14, she fully completed her graded exams (ABRSM) with distinction. A few months later, she passed her piano ATCL Recital Diploma Exam.

Jolynn studied piano under the tutelage of the Malaysian-renowned pianist Dr Nicholas Ong, the first Malaysian to receive a doctorate in piano performance at the prestigious Juilliard School in USA. Jolynn has also studied under many concert pianists such as Andrew Brownell, champion of the 2005 J.N. Hummel Competition, and Li Ming Qiang, winner of the 4th Chopin International Competition 1960[6].

Jolynn J Chin has also taken part in various competitions worldwide and was awarded Gold Prize for the 2016 Asia International Piano Academy Festival and Competition held in Seoul, South Korea.

She made her first debut on-stage appearance in which she showcased her crossover style of music at the annual Sarawak Entertainers Night 2016[7]. She showcased the prototype version of Toccata, and her performance garnered her press and radio interviews.

Jolynn was then invited to perform on Radio Televisyen Malaysia's programme, "Blue Note Lounge" which was broadcast live on Malaysia's national radio and television[8].

She was also invited to perform at Sarawak Economic Development Corporation's (SEDC) annual Kuching Waterfront Jazz Festival in 2017.[9]. She was invited to perform again at the Kuching Waterfront Jazz Festival in 2018[10].

Later Jolynn was engaged in the project of producing her first single, "Toccata" in 2017 with Lion Studios Pte Ltd in Singapore. She then met her music producer, Roger Montejano, member of the Recording Academy, NYC Chapter, in which he produced her first single, Toccata[1][11].

“Toccata” was a hit that garnered many positive reviews in magazines and media outlets including "Applause to the Musician" (USA), "One Song Magazine" (INDIA), "Asian Journeys" (SINGAPORE), and tvSarawak.com (MALAYSIA)[12].

2019: Beyond Classical

Roger Montejano then produced Jolynn J Chin's first Extended Play (EP) "Beyond Classical" which also involved the work of mastering engineers Howie Weinberg and Mike Couzzi. Beyond Classical EP was released in 2019[4]. The EP ranked #32 in Spanish iTunes charts[13]
