Jon Mann

Jon Mann (born October 31, 1989.[1]) is a Canadian filmmaker, screenwriter, and producer. He is the founder of the production company Popular Demand Pictures and currently serves as the Head of Development at Clerisy Entertainment[2]. His work spans short films, feature documentaries, and factual television series, and has been recognized at festivals across Canada.

Early life and education

Mann was born in Fredericton, New Brunswick. He graduated from Leo Hayes High School. He completed his undergraduate degree in Political Science at Acadia University in 2011, where he was also the communications correspondent for the men's hockey team.[3] In 2013, he graduated from the New York Film Academy's one-year Screenwriting program in New York.[4]

Career

Early work

Mann began his career writing and directing independent short films. His early work includes Wolfville, a television pilot developed with producing partner Rob Ramsay, which was selected for the 2017 National Screen Institute’s Totally Television program.[5] The project was later optioned by Allan Hawco’s Take the Shot Productions.[6] He also created the factual comedy series Pub Crawl, which aired for two seasons on Bell Fibe TV in 2020.

Stephen King adaptations

Mann’s literary idol is Stephen King.[7] In 2018, he acquired the rights to adapt the short story Popsy through King’s Dollar Baby Program for $1.[8] The film was shot over 3.5 days[9]. The poster for Popsy was praised by critic Leonardo Granado as "one of the most creative posters I have ever seen in my life,"[10] and the film received a five-star review on SKSM.[11] It premiered in 2019 and was covered by CBC News[12] and multiple Stephen King fan publications.[13][14]

In 2024, Popsy was selected for special screening at KingCon, with author Stephen King granting one-time permission for the event to feature select Dollar Baby films following the program’s official conclusion.[15]

CBC later purchased the distribution rights to Mann’s earlier Stephen King adaptation, Missy[16], which was filmed at his family cottage.[17]

Documentary work

Mann wrote and directed the feature-length documentary Project Power in 2014, and released a short doc titled Drink 'Em Dry in 2021. In 2022, he directed You Can Call Me Roger, a documentary that examines the residential school system in Canada through the story of Chief Roger Augustine. It had its world premiere at the Atlantic International Film Festival[18] and won Best Documentary at the 2022 Silver Wave Film Festival.[19]

Speaking to Halifax Presents about the film, Mann stated:

“I wanted to understand things happening in the country I grew up in and did not learn about in the public school system in New Brunswick. If there was anything that my career or craft could give to the reconciliation process, then I wanted to do that.”[20]

Awards and recognition

In addition to the Best Documentary award for You Can Call Me Roger, Mann’s comedy short Cahoots won Best Canadian Film at the 2019 Canadian International Comedy Film Festival.[21] Mann also served as associate producer[22] on the 2022 award winning short film North Star, starring Coleman Domingo, directed by P. J. Palmer and executive produced by Academy Award–winning producer Andrew Carlberg.[23] The film earned over 80 awards on the festival circuit[24]

Personal life

Mann currently resides in Halifax, Nova Scotia.[25]
