Jon Pearlman

Dr. Pearlman, is an Associate Professor at the University of Pittsburgh Department of Rehabilitation Science & Technology.[1][2] and the Associate Director for Product Innovation & Technology Translation at the Human Research Engineering Lab (HERL)[3].   He has extensive experience in international work and currently serves as the director of the International Society of Wheelchair Professionals (ISWP)[4][5].

Early life[edit]

Jon was born in Canton, Ohio and moved to California where he lived in the Bay Area and San Diego.  Jon’s career path in rehabilitation technology was strongly influenced by his stepfather, Mike Gardner, who is a wheelchair user and Vietnam Veteran.  

Education[edit]

He received his undergraduate degree in Mechanical Engineering from UC Berkeley, his masters form Cornell University in 2002 and hid PhD from the University of Pittsburgh in Rehabilitation Science and Technology[6] in 2007, with an emphasis on assistive technology design and transfer to developing countries.

Career[edit]

Dr. Jon Pearlman has worked as consultant for Cornell University, Whirlwind Wheelchairs International, the World Health Organization, among others[7].

He currently works as Associate Professor at the University of Pittsburgh Department of Rehabilitation Science & Technology[8][9] and has a joint appointment at the Department of Bio-Engineering. He has advised over 40 students in both undergraduate and graduate level. He also serves as the director of the director of the International Society of Wheelchair Professionals[10][11].

He is member of several committees and organizations such as ASME and RESNA, where he served as chair of the Special Interest Group (SIG) on Assistive Technology For Developing Countries (SIG17). He is a member of ISO 7176 and ANSI/RESNA Wheelchair Standards Committee, and serves as the convener of ISO 7176/SC2/WG1 which covers manual wheelchair standards. Jon is also a member of Wheelchair Advisory Group of the International Society of Prosthetics & Orthotics was part of the Steering Committee for Market Shaping in AT Sector; a project sponsored by USAID and Led by Boston Consulting Group in collaboration with WHO, UNICEF, DFID; and board Member, Community Living and Support Services (CLASS) of Pittsburgh.

Research interests[edit]

Dr. Pearlman's research interests[12][1] are in the areas of participatory action design, assistive technology transfer methods and new product development[13]

He has served as journal and grant reviewer for Assistive Technology (editorial board member), Journal of Orthopedic Research, Journal of Rehabilitation Research and Development, Prosthetics and Orthotics International, Disability and Rehabilitation: Assistive Technology, Archives of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation. And grant reviewer for Veterans Administration, Paralyzed Veterans of America, VentureWell, Pitt’s Center for Medical Innovation, Coulter Program.

He has several publications in peer reviewed journals in areas such as International work, wheelchair design and testing, and professional training. He has also published books and book chapters. He has been invited to talk about Curb-ramp inspection systems[14], and standards related to Wheelchair Provision.

Inventions and Patents[edit]

He has over 10 patents [15][16][17][18][19][20][21][22] and has received funding for more than 40 design and development projects.

Recognition and Awards[edit]

Jon has been recognized with ASEE Best Student Design Award (1995), Rory A Cooper/Dion Johnson Award (2005), Sean and Stephanie Shimada Award (2005, Yasmin Garcia), Best Mentor Award in NSF REU (2012).  Jon’s students have also been recognized extensively including: Sean and Stephanie Shimada Award (2012, 2013 Jonathan Duvall), University of Pittsburgh Innovation Award (2012-2016), RST Thomas J. Some of his students accomplishes are to win the Goldman Prize for Entrepreneurship in Education (2017, Mahender Mandala) the Dick Thornburgh Forum Disability Service Award (2017, Jon Duvall), the Randal Big Idea Competition (2015, Eric Sinagra, Jon Duvall, Tim Chen), and entry into AlphaLab Gear (Eric Sinagra for pathvu.com)

Jon has supported or co-founded Pathway Accessibility Systems, LLC and Nexaware based on technology him and his team have developed and licensed.
