Jon Sumple is an American filmmaker, writer, producer, and marketing executive. He is one of the three co-founders of j3FILMS, alongside Jack Roth and Jamie Sernoff.[1][2] With Roth, Sumple has been one of the company's principal creative figures, developing documentary and scripted feature projects.[1]
Sumple has served as a producer, director, and writer on the documentary films Extraordinary: The Stan Romanek Story (2017), Extraordinary: The Seeding (2019), and Extraordinary: The Revelations (2021).[3][4][5] The films are part of j3FILMS' Extraordinary trilogy, focused on UFOs, alien abduction claims, and related phenomena.[2]
Career
Sumple began making short-form video work in the late 1980s and submitted entries to the Fort Lauderdale International Film Festival's "Off the Wall" amateur video competition in 1989 and 1990.[1] His 1990 short The Relentless Pursuit of Stimulation was a finalist in the competition.[1]
In 2013, Extraordinary: The Stan Romanek Story premiered at the Fort Lauderdale International Film Festival.[6] According to Sumple's IMDb biography, the film later received a Special Jury Prize at the festival.[1]
j3FILMS returned to the Fort Lauderdale International Film Festival in 2018 with a festival cut of Extraordinary: The Seeding.[7] The film was later screened at multiple festivals and received documentary and directing honors, according to the company's published materials.[2]
His third film in the trilogy, Extraordinary: The Revelations, was released in 2021.[5] j3FILMS states that it has worked in partnership with 1091 Pictures on distribution since 2017.[2]
Outside film, Sumple has also written about long-term travel and remote work. In 2021, he wrote a first-person article for MarketWatch about traveling internationally while freelancing.[8] He also co-hosts the podcast Sumplace New, about long-term travel and digital nomad life.[9]
In 2023, Deadline reported that Sumple, along with Roth and Sernoff of j3FILMS, was among the founding members of the Hollywood Disclosure Alliance, a nonprofit formed to connect storytellers and UFO researchers.[10]
Roth & Sumple Storytellers
Separately, Sumple and Jack Roth operate under the Roth & Sumple Storytellers banner, where they develop scripted films and narrative projects. Their current development slate focuses on metaphysical and genre-driven storytelling, including the period western Etta, which is reported to be in advanced development.
