Jonas Hjort is a Danish-Norwegian development economist and Associate Professor of Economics at Columbia University Graduate School of Business. He joined the faculty of Columbia University in 2012, after receiving his Ph.D. from the University of California, Berkeley.[1] His research focuses on firms, workers, and public-sector organizations in poor countries.[2] One of his best-known studies, published in 2019, studies how Internet in Africa affects employment.[3][4][5][6][7] He is also cited for his work on the direct effect of ethnic divisions on productivity.[8][9] [10]

Teaching[edit]

In his role as Associate Professor at Columbia Business School he teaches two MBA courses, Managerial Economics and Global Immersion: New Growth and Business Opportunities in East Africa.[11]

Jonas Hjort holds a number of affiliations. He is a Faculty Research Fellow at NBER, a Research Affiliate at Bureau for Research and Economic Analysis of Development (BREAD), a Distinguished CESifo Affiliate, a Research Affiliate at CEPR and the Lead Academic for the Sierra Leone and Liberia Program at IGC.[12][13][14][15][16][17]
