Jonatan Martínez-Gómez (JONMAR)[1] is a Mexican-American, multi-media visual artist and musician based in New York City.

Early Life[edit]

Jonatan was born in San Luis Potosí, México. Jonatan's paternal grandmother was Victoria González-Medellín, a soprano singer. Jonatan's maternal grandfather was Román Gómez, a violinist from Villa de Zaragoza, member of Socorro Perea y Los Cantores De La Sierra[2] and touring musician for Óscar Chávez. Jonatan's father is an active, Mexican architect.

In 1999, Jonatan moved to Conroe, Texas. A few years later, Jonatan moved to The Woodlands, Texas, and met Venezuelan-American artist, Igraine Grey (IGREY).[3]

Education and career[edit]

From 2010–11, Jonatan studied film production with Bushra Azzouz at the Northwest Film Center in Portland, Oregon. In 2011, Jonatan joined partner Igraine, in documenting Megacities for a Travelling Fellowship[4] through Japan, South Korea, China, Bangladesh, and India. They spent several months abroad, in France, where they started a collaborative experimental video practice. From 2012–15, Jonatan studied Photography and Digital Media at the University of Houston, earning a BFA degree. From 2016–18, Jonatan studied at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, mentoring with Kurt Hentschlager, earning an MFA degree in Film, Video, New Media, Animation. While at SAIC, Jonatan, and other members of Claudia Hart’s Virtual Installation studio, created an image-based augmented-reality app for the MCA’s Riot Grrrls exhibition.[5] Jonatan continued to collaborate with Claudia Hart throughout 2018 and 2019, helping to develop and research AR/VR implementations for Hart’s project Flower Matrix, through CNMAT Berkeley.

GREYMAR[edit]

In 2013, in Houston, Jonatan and Igraine co-founded the duo GREYMAR.[6] The name is a combination of the last names, and refers to the Spanglish term, “grey sea.” Some of their immersive installations include: Biorhythm (2020) at EMPAC, Azul (2019) at Collarworks, Red (2018) at Ars Electronica,[7] Rhizcity (2017) at EXPO Chicago[8] and SITE Columbus,[9] Hollowcene (2017) at SAIC, Chaozomes (2015) at BlueOrange.[10] Some of their experimental video screenings include: Sola (2018) at EMPAC, Bloodshift (2018) at Gene Siskel Film Center, Deathing (2017) at Elastic Arts, and I (2013) at Houston International Film Festival.

Other Collaborations[edit]

Jonatan has collaborated with several artists, including: Selim Lemouchi, Paul Masvidal, Kurt Hentschlager, Claudia Hart, and Jacob Melgren. In 2013, Jonatan created the cover art and video of Selim Lemouchi's single “Next Stop Universe B,” under the moniker IDIE, the precursor of GREYMAR. In 2019, Jonatan created the cover art of Paul Masvidal's “Mythical Human Vessel” trilogy, and the videos “The Spaces,” “Parasite,” “Nebula,” and “Hand to Mouth,”[11] as GREYMAR. The Masvidal + GREYMAR collaboration also involved proposals for immersive acoustic performances that engage technology.[12]
