Jonathan Blum (born April 27,1958) is an American businessman, philanthropist and the former Senior Vice President/Chief Global Nutrition and Public Affairs Officer of Yum! Brands, Inc. [1] [2]

After retiring from Yum! Brands in 2016, Blum created Bad Martha Farmer’s Brewery and is the CEO, Founder and sole owner.[3]  He opened the first location in Edgartown, Martha’s Vineyard in 2014, and he expanded to a second location in East Falmouth, MA in 2019.[4] In 2022, Bad Martha Farmer’s Brewery locations were listed in USA Today’s 10 Best list for best beer gardens and taprooms in New England. [5]

Early Life and Education[edit]

Jonathan Blum was born and grew up in Springfield, MA.  After graduating from George Washington University, he was a staff assistant in the White House Presidential Advance and Scheduling Office for President Carter.[6] He earned a Juris Doctorate from Western New England School of Law. [7]

Career[edit]

Blum ran public affairs offices for Ogilvy & Mather in Chicago, Singapore, Hong Kong, China, and Asia-Pacific, before becoming Vice President at PepsiCo’s Taco Bell restaurant company.[8] [9]

He then became Senior Vice President, Chief Public Affairs Officer and Global Nutrition Officer for Yum! Brands, Inc. and reported to Chairman and CEO, David Novak.[10] He served on the Company’s Compliance and Oversight Committee, led the Nutrition Policy Committee, and co-led the Food Safety Committee and Quality Assurance Task Force.  He served on the senior executive team that ran the worldwide company until retiring in 2016.[11]

During his time serving on the executive management team, the Company doubled the number of restaurants, market capitalization grew to nearly $32 billion from just under $4 billion and it was an industry leader in return on invested capital. [12]  

He was also Vice Chairman of the Yum! Brands Foundation.[13] [14] [15]

He created Yum! Brands’ worldwide Hunger Relief Program in conjunction with the United Nations World Food Programme and served on the U.S. WFP Board.[16]  The initiative was recognized as the world’s largest public-private sector hunger relief effort in the world. [13] [17] [18] [15]

Blum served as a corporate director of Kindred Healthcare and Thornton’s Oil and was the Chairman of the Muhammad Ali Center.[19][not in citation given] He was appointed by the Town of Edgartown to serve on its Strategic Master Plan Committee. [20] He was an executive in residence at Northwestern University’s Medill Graduate, regularly lecturing on integrated marketing communications and organizational development. [21]
