Jonathan Payne (b. 1979) is an American playwright based in New York whose work has been produced and developed at Rattlestick Playwrights Theater, Williamstown Theater Festival, The Playwrights Realm, and Long Wharf Theatre. He was a fellow at The Juilliard School, New Dramatists, Playwrights Realm, The Dramatist Guild, and Ars Nova Play Group. He received a BA from the GSA Conservatoire (UK), an MFA in Playwriting from Tisch School of the Arts, and an Artist Diploma in Playwriting from The Juilliard School.[1]

Background

Jonathan Payne was born and raised in Los Angeles, California. His mother, Opal Payne, a devout Christian and a private duty nurse, adopted him as a single parent.[2] He went to Hobart Elementary School, and graduated from University High School. While in high school he found the theatre where he performed in musicals and plays, and wrote and produced his very first play.

He attended Santa Monica College (SMC) where he majored in Journalism but continued his pursuit of the arts, and acted in several plays and musicals, while writing features about the student body. His biggest accomplishment at SMC was when he wrote and performed in his play Slavery, which was based on the Slave Narratives collected by the Works Progress Administration. The play earned him the John Cauble Short Play Award from the Kennedy Center's American College Theatre Festival[3], where the play was invited to be performed. [4]

He attended The GSA Conservatoire where he earned a BA in Musical Theatre, and Tisch School of the Arts where he earned a Master’s in Dramatic Writing. He most recently graduated from The Lila Acheson Playwrights Fellowship at The Juilliard School.

He lives with his wife Dr. Debyani Chakravarty,[5] a cancer biologist at Memorial Sloan Kettering, and his son Hari Chakravarty-Payne.
