Jonathan Perry (filmmaker)
Jonathan Perry (born July 21, 2001) is an American filmmaker and screenwriter. He is best known for his 2019 film Subnivean, which garnered critical acclaim and was subsequently acquired by Amazon Prime Video for international distribution, making him “the youngest director on any streaming service”.[1] at the age of 17.
Early life
Jonathan was born July 21, 2001 to James and Rebecca Schroeder, who at the age of 12 became the world's youngest female inventor[2]. He also has a brother, William.
Jonathan grew up in Sandusky, attending St. Mary’s Central Catholic High School and graduating in 2020. Otherwise, Perry was a member of the Boy Scouts of America, becoming an Eagle Scout in 2017[3].
Career
Early Screenplays
Starting at age 13, Jonathan wrote short film scripts, the copyright to which he found could be sold through online message boards[4]. Eventually, a message board member offered to pay Jonathan $4,000 for the rights to his short script Subnivean, prompting him to take another look at the piece and decide to adapt it for himself.
Subnivean / Industry Breakthrough
After nearly a year of pre-production, Subnivean was shot in Marquette, Michigan[5] with a crew consisting of industry professionals and students from Northern Michigan University[6]. The film, which starred Cody Struck and Christian Leonard, had a budget of $22,000 and is described as follows:
“After a vicious chase home from gathering firewood, an innocent boy unknowingly leads his brother to fall through an isolated pond. The boy has to accept and use his twisted hallucinations of hatred as his only hope to break the ice and save his brother in time or die trying.”
Future Projects
Perry has taken on a range of new projects and collaborations, most notably writing a feature screenplay set to be produced in 2021 with a writing budget of 1.5 million dollars.
Perry is also developing "Project X7," which is planned to launch digitally in 2019. Through an interview[7] with filmmaker Alex Ferrari, Perry was able to get in touch with Steven Spielberg who has expressed interest in the project.
Influences and style of filmmaking
Perry is known for his use of practical effects over CGI[8], and fluid cinematography. He has cited Christopher Nolan and David Fincher as major influences on these decisions.
