Jonathan Weiss is an American physician, lawyer, and healthcare entrepreneur best known as the founder and CEO of HealthEngine, a healthcare technology company focused on medical price transparency, bundled payments, and patient cost-sharing incentives.[1][2] He has led the creation of several competition-based healthcare marketplaces and hospital contracting models in both the United Kingdom and the United States.
Early life and education
Weiss earned a Bachelor of Arts in Government from Harvard University. He later completed a Bachelor of Arts in Jurisprudence at the University of Oxford and studied at the Oxford Faculty of Law.[3]
He received a Master of Business Administration (MBA) in 2000 and a Doctor of Medicine (MD) in 2001 from the University of Chicago, completing the institution’s joint MD/MBA program.[4][5]
He also earned a Master’s degree in Health Economics and Policy at Stanford University.[3]
Career
Early international ventures
Between 2000 and 2012, Weiss founded and successfully sold three international healthcare companies.[4] His first company, Nations Healthcare, became the largest private-sector hospital organization partnered with the British National Health Service (NHS). Under multiyear agreements, the NHS guaranteed millions of cases to hospital groups such as Nations Healthcare, which competed to design, staff, and operate specialty centers.[4]
Weiss subsequently founded Endeavour Health and Premier Health Partners, two additional marketplace platforms in which UK healthcare providers competed in real time on both clinical quality and cost to attract patients.[4] These ventures served as early models for competition-based, value-driven healthcare delivery.
HealthEngine
Weiss founded HealthEngine in Chicago in 2012 as a price-transparency and competition platform for common medical procedures.[2][1] The company negotiates bundled medical rates with hospitals and outpatient centers, allowing patients and employers to compare costs for MRIs, colonoscopies, orthopedic procedures, and similar services.[2]
The platform also offers concierge support for scheduling and insurance verification. Patients who select lower-priced facilities receive a portion of the savings through HealthEngine’s rebate program, once claims are processed.[1][6]
According to *Chicago Booth Magazine*, HealthEngine delivers prices that average 52 percent below those achieved by the largest national health insurers.[4] A bipartisan Congressional delegation visited the company to study its cost-reduction model, after which HealthEngine was invited to implement its platform for the Blue Cross health plan serving members and staff of the U.S. Congress and the Supreme Court.[4]
