Biography
Jorge Fernando Jairoce (born 13 March 1981) is a Mozambican historian, academic, and public servant. He has held the position of Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Industry and Commerce of Mozambique since 2020. In this role, he has been involved in the development of economic and industrial policy.[1]
From 2014 to 2020, he served as Director of the National Library of Mozambique. During this period, the library signed a cooperation agreement with the National Library of Brazil in 2016. Between 2022 and 2023, Jairoce chaired the Intergovernmental Committee of Senior Officials and Experts at the Economic Commission for Africa – Southern Africa Sub-office.[2]
Jairoce holds a PhD in History, specializing in Political-Institutional Relations, from the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS) in Brazil. He teaches in the Doctoral Program in African History at the Pedagogical University of Maputo and is an Associate Researcher at the Mandela Institute for Development Studies (MINDS) in Johannesburg, South Africa.[3]
Books and Publications
In 2024, Jairoce published the book The Woman and the Informal Cross-border Trade Mukhero in Southern Mozambique (ISBN 978-3-33-345-788-7), which examines the role of women in informal cross-border trade between Mozambique and its neighboring countries.[4]
He has also authored academic papers and articles on topics including:
- The impact of colonial legacies on African economies.
- Regional integration within the Southern African Development Community (SADC).
- Political-institutional transformations in Mozambique.[5]
