Jorge Silva Guerra (11 April 1897 – 14 March 1973) was a Chilean electrical engineer and politician who served as Minister of Economy and Commerce from 1954 to 1955 during the second administration of President Carlos Ibáñez del Campo.[1]

Early life

Silva was born in Valparaíso on 11 April 1897, the son of Alberto Silva Palma and Lucinda Guerra.[2] He attended the Instituto de Humanidades Luis Campino before studying at the University of Chile and Cornell University in the United States, graduating as an electrical engineer in 1919.[2]

He married twice, first to Elena Rojas Villegas, with whom he had three daughters, and later to Beatriz Pérez Walker, with whom he had four children.[3]

Silva began his professional career in 1921 as an engineer with an electricity company, where he subsequently served as chief engineer, deputy general manager, and general manager. From 1942, he also held senior positions with Compañía Ingeniería Eléctrica S.A. and the Compañía Chilena de Electricidad.[2]

Political career

In 1952, Silva was elected president of the Cámara Central de Comercio. Politically unaffiliated, he was appointed Minister of Economy and Commerce by President Carlos Ibáñez del Campo on 4 June 1954. He remained in office until 30 May 1955.[1]

After leaving the cabinet, Silva served as a director of the Banco del Estado de Chile.[2] He was also a member of the Instituto de Ingenieros de Chile and several civic and social organisations.[2]

Silva died in Santiago on 14 March 1973, aged 75.[3]
