Jornal da Band is a Brazilian news show produced and presented by Rede Bandeirantes. It premiered on October 12, 1977, under the command of Salomão Esper, with the title Jornal Bandeirantes, used until 1997.
History
As Jornal Bandeirantes (1977-97)
Jornal Bandeirantes debuted on October 12, 1977, replacing the former Titulares da Notícia that had ended the day before. Salomão Esper, who was already the host of Titulares da Notícia, was one of its first anchors. During the 1970s, he suffered constantly from censorship by the military regime in Brazil.
In the 1980s, Jornal Bandeirantes gained national reach. Among its presenters were Ferreira Martins, Ronaldo Rosas, Geraldo Ribeiro, Joelmir Beting, Belisa Ribeiro, Luiz Santoro and Marília Gabriela, who presented the news show in parallel to her talk-shows, such as Cara a Cara.
Martins and Gabriela presented Jornal Bandeirantes together from 1988 to 1991, when they were replaced by Chico Pinheiro, who remained until 1995, when he migrated to RecordTV (then Rede Record). In her place came Carla Vilhena, the news show's anchor between 1995 and 1997. On February 15, 1997, the news show was last aired with this nomenclature.
As Jornal da Band (since 1997)
1997-2009
On February 17, 1997, at 8pm, Jornal da Band (English: Band Journal) was launched, when the nomenclature of Jornal Bandeirantes started using the informal nickname that its namesake network had been using since 1993. Carla Vilhena continued to anchor the news until March of the same year, when Paulo Henrique Amorim left his position as Rede Globo's correspondent in the United States to take over the news show.[1]
As the editor-in-chief of Jornal da Band, he demanded that it start strictly at 8pm (which was not the case before) and have a parallel newsroom. In an extremely opiniative and "independent" tone, Amorim disagreed with several politicians, including former President of Brazil Lula, questioning him about undeclared income tax assets. At the beginning of 1999, the journalist had a disagreement with Rede Bandeirantes, in which he was replaced by Marcos Hummel thereafter, who eventually presented the news show.[2]
Hummel won the company of Janine Borba, who was replaced by Letícia Levy on June 9, 2003.[3] Both stayed in front of the news until March 12, 2004, when Carlos Nascimento left Rede Globo and started to present Jornal da Band, which had the comments of two ex-globais: Ricardo Boechat and Joelmir Beting. The "girl of time" became Mariana Ferrão, who came from Rede 21. With Nascimento's transfer to SBT, Boechat, who covered Nascimento's days off, became the anchor of Jornal da Band in 2006, co-anchoring the news show with Ferrão and Beting.
On December 3, 2007, Jornal da Band premiered a new scenario and began broadcasting in high definition. Ferrão presented the news for the last time on March 28, 2008, due to her departure to Rede Globo. On March 31, Ticiana Villas Boas joined the trio of the news show's presenters, replacing her.
2010-present
In October 2012, Beting was removed from Jornal da Band for treatment of an autoimmune disease at the Albert Einstein Hospital in São Paulo. The treatment began on the 22nd of that month, and a little more than a month later, on November 29th, the journalist died from a stroke. After his death, Boechat and Villas Boas continued the presentation of Jornal da Band.
On April 28, 2014, Jornal da Band gained a new look and began to be presented in Band's new newsroom. On December 27, 2014, at the end of the Saturday edition, hostess Villas Boas announced to viewers that she would leave the news show for five months, entering into maternity leave. But in April 2015, she left the station and went to SBT, after seven years on the stand of Jornal da Band, having been the female anchor who stayed ahead of the attraction the longest. Paloma Tocci, who was covering her leave until then, took over Jornal da Band's presentation.
On July 11, 2016, Jornal da Band was broadcast live on Facebook, becoming the first Brazilian free-to-air TV news program to be presented on the social network.
Boechat ran Jornal da Band until February 8, 2019, a Friday. In the early afternoon of the following Monday, February 11th, the journalist died in an accident with the helicopter that brought him from Campinas, where he had held a lecture. Since the journalist's death, the news show has been presented by Fábio Pannunzio, who took his place next to Lana Canepa. The death of Boechat made Rede Bandeirantes alter the plans initially made for journalist Eduardo Oinegue, who sporadically participated in programs of BandNews TV and the radio networks Rádio Bandeirantes and BandNews FM, and would assume Jornal da Noite in a future reformulation.
