Josef Manuel, known professionally as “Ze Cobra,” is an American Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu practitioner, instructor, and 4th-degree black belt. He is the founder and head instructor of Chokelab Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Academy in New Jersey. Manuel is recognized for his competitive achievements in international Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu tournaments and for being one of the early American black belts promoted under Robson Moura.[1][2]

Early life and background

Josef Manuel was born and raised in Newark, New Jersey, United States. He began training in martial arts at a young age, initially practicing boxing before transitioning into grappling disciplines after being influenced by early Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) events.

His exposure to Brazilian culture and martial arts came through local Brazilian communities in New Jersey, which later played a role in shaping his interest in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu career

Manuel began his Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu training in 2001 under Mario Lemos, a black belt under Rickson and Royler Gracie lineage. He later continued his development under Robson “Robinho” Moura, an 8-time world champion and member of Nova União.

In 2009, Manuel was promoted to black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu under Robson Moura. His promotion was later recognized within the Nova União association.

Throughout his competitive career, Manuel has participated in multiple IBJJF and regional tournaments, earning podium finishes in events such as:

  • IBJJF Pan American Championships
  • IBJJF European Open
  • IBJJF New York Open
  • NAGA and Grapplers Quest competitions

He is also known for competing into his late 30s at a high level, achieving notable podium placements in IBJJF adult divisions.

Chokelab Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Academy

Manuel is the founder and head instructor of Chokelab Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Academy, located in Harrison, New Jersey. The academy provides instruction in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu for both adults and children and competes in regional and international events.

Chokelab athletes have achieved team success in competitions such as the PBJJF Spring International Open, earning team titles in multiple divisions.

Teaching and law enforcement training

In addition to sports competition, Manuel has contributed to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu instruction for law enforcement and military applications. He has earned U.S. Army Combatives Level 1 and Level 2 certifications and has conducted training for federal agents and local law enforcement personnel.
