Joseph Carlin

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

Joseph Vincent Carlin (1742 – Dec. 30, 1809) was a colonist and pioneer in the early history of South Louisiana. He was the first European settler in the Bayou Teche region, founding Carlin's Settlement, present day Franklin, Louisiana, in the 1780's. His name is also attached to present-day Bayou Carlin near Delcambre, Louisiana, and it was previously attached to Bayou Petit Anse, known then as Côte Carlin.

Carlin arrived in Louisiana from France during the Seven Years' War (known in North America as the French and Indian War) and served as a naval infantryman.[1] He was discharged from the French military[2] following the upheaval of the Louisiana Rebellion of 1768. The timing indicates that he was unwilling to take the oath of allegiance to the Spanish crown.

His presence in the region is remarked upon in accounts of english-speaking travellers through the Teche region during this period, including in the journal of James Leander Cathcart.[3]
