Joseph Ciccone
Rev. Dr. Joseph L. Ciccone (born January 21, 1960) is a Progressive Catholic Priest in the Order of Franciscan Servants and the Pastor of Saint Joseph Mission Church in Cliffside Park, NJ. Ciccone’s prior assignments include ministry staff at Saint Miriam Old Catholic Church in Flourtown, PA as Priest and Parochial Vicar; prior to that, Ciccone was a Chapel Minister and Assistant to the Director of Worship at James Memorial Chapel at Union Theological Seminary [1] [2]. He is currently enrolled in his 6th year of CPE (Clinical Pastoral Education) at the Jewish Theological Seminary, having recently completed a Master of Divinity at Union Theological Seminary in the City of New York with a focus on Social Justice. Ciccone has been teaching for the Jesuit Refugee Mission in Africa online [3].
Early Life and Career
Ciccone was born in Englewood, NJ to Catherine Mazzone and Joseph Ciccone Sr., and joined the Cliffside Park Police Department in 1980 [4]. In 1983, Ciccone was appointed to the Fairview Police Department, spending most of his career there in various roles [5]. Ciccone retired as a police commander, after a 20-year career of public service, and as a Social Science/Criminal Justice professor [6]. Ciccone’s leadership within the Criminal Justice System began by serving as a Police Officer on foot patrol and culminated in being elected the county’s highest law enforcement official, Sheriff of Bergen County [7]. As Sheriff, Ciccone commanded nearly 500 officers and civilian personnel, managed a $41 million budget, and provided services and protection to a population of one million citizens.
Education
Ciccone has a Bachelor of Science and a Master’s in Criminal Justice Administration, both from New Jersey City University, graduating in 1987. Ciccone has extensive teaching experience, from the elementary education system to the position of Director of Teacher Education at Keiser University, the position he held before starting Seminary in 2010 at Union Theological Seminary in the City of New York, graduating in 2013 with a Master of Divinity. Ciccone’s Doctorate in Education for Child and Youth Studies from Nova Southeastern University focused on cognitive development and integrated many of the pedagogical challenges that affect our society and issues of minority equality.
Ciccone served as Chairperson of General Education & Dean of Learning Technologies at Berkeley College in West Paterson, New Jersey for nearly 10 years and helped develop their on-line program. Ciccone also served as Professor of Criminal Justice at Monmouth University for nearly a collective decade on a full-time basis while managing a successful law enforcement career.
Priesthood
