Joseph Matal is an American lawyer and patent official who served as acting head of the United States Patent and Trademark Office from 2017 to 2018.[1][2][3][4]
Career
Matal served in the USPTO's Office of the Solicitor, where he handled appellate matters, and had also served as acting chief of staff. Before entering the USPTO, he worked as counsel to members of the United States Senate and was involved in legislative work on the Leahy–Smith America Invents Act.[1][5]
Acting USPTO director
Following the resignation of Michelle K. Lee, Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross named Matal to perform the functions and duties of the Under Secretary of Commerce for Intellectual Property and Director of the USPTO, effective June 7, 2017, while a permanent successor was nominated and confirmed.[1][2]
