Joseph Musowoya is a Zambian general surgeon, medical academic and researcher. His work has included clinical surgery, postgraduate surgical education, hospital administration and surgical capacity building in Zambia.[1] He is a Senior Lecturer at the Copperbelt University School of Medicine and has served as Training Program Director for the College of Surgeons of East, Central and Southern Africa (COSECSA) and Governor of the Zambia Chapter of the American College of Surgeons.[2]

Medical and administrative career

Musowoya developed his surgical and administrative career in Zambia's Copperbelt Province. In 2017, he was serving as Senior Medical Superintendent of Kitwe Teaching Hospital. Contemporary reporting identified him in that position during expansion of the hospital's specialist workforce and infrastructure.[3]

Musowoya subsequently served as Senior Medical Superintendent of Ndola Teaching Hospital. A 2021 study in Tropical Doctor identifies him in that position.[4]

His clinical work at Ndola has included general and gastrointestinal surgery. Published case reports and clinical series from Ndola Teaching Hospital have included his participation in the management of oesophageal disease, pancreatic pseudocyst and other complex surgical conditions.[5]

Surgical education and research

Musowoya has been involved in postgraduate surgical training through COSECSA. A study published in the American Journal of Surgery identified him as a COSECSA Zambia Country Representative and as affiliated with the Department of Surgery at Ndola Central Hospital.[6]

His research has included surgical education, clinical surgery and health-service research. He was also a co-author of research examining surgical education needs in Zambian residency programmes.[7]

Musowoya later joined the Copperbelt University School of Medicine as a Senior Lecturer. He has also served as a COSECSA Training Program Director and Governor of the Zambia Chapter of the American College of Surgeons.[8]

Surgical outreach and capacity building

Musowoya has participated in surgical outreach and skills-transfer programmes. In 2026, the Zambia Flying Doctor Service reported that he led the mentorship and skills-transfer component of a seven-day surgical outreach at Chama District Hospital. The programme reported 28 operations and involved local clinicians and theatre staff in surgical care and training.[9]

COSECSA College Anthem

Musowoya composed the College Anthem of the College of Surgeons of East, Central and Southern Africa. An official video of the anthem credits Joseph Musowoya of Zambia as its composer.[10]

Awards and recognition

In 2022, the Zambia Medical Association named Musowoya as one of the Copperbelt Province recipients of its Distinguished Service Award. The association states that the award recognises members for exemplary leadership and dedication to clinical practice or research.[11]
