Joseph Raymond Lucero
Joseph Raymond Lucero (born 1977) is a reformed gang-member and American actor best known for his role as Neron 'Creeper' Vargas in crime drama Mayans M.C..[1][2][3] He also played the role of Chavez in Gridiron Gang[4] starring Dwayne Johnson and appeared in episode 2 of Shameless.
Early life[edit]
Lucero was born in San Diego in 1977[5]. Joseph was born a third-generation gang member. Both his parents were heroine addicts[6] which led to Lucero's first police encounter at the age of 9.
Personal life[edit]
During the first 26 years of his life, he spent 12 of them behind bars. Six of those years were for the attempted murders of three people[7].
His son, also named Joseph Raymond Lucero, was born while he was in jail[8]. Soon after, Joseph decided quit being a gang-banger and started attending Criminals and Gang-members Anonymous (CGA). Joseph Lucero is a recovering alcoholic[9].
He was one of the first people to be charged under the Street Terrorism Enforcement and Prevention Act[10].
Career[edit]
Lucero was released in 2003 and was hired by Father Greg Boyle to do outreach and public speaking for Homeboy Industries, a gang rehabilitation program[11]. Joe uses storytelling to bring awareness and hope to gang-members and formerly incarcerated.
Lucero made his acting debut in 2006 with the film Gridiron Gang[11][12]. In 2007, a documentary was filmed about Homeboy Industries that featured Lucero[11]. Since then, he has featured in movie and television shows including Mayan M.C., Shameless, Criminal Minds, ER, Cold Case, The Shield, The Closer. [4][11][13]
