His first book, Red Dirt (2020), was "20 years in the making", and came after the deaths of musicians Tom Skinner, Brandon Jenkins, and Steve Ripley and the encouragement of John Cooper of the Red Dirt Rangers in 2018.[4] Red Dirt features chapters on scene icons including Tom Skinner, the Red Dirt Rangers, Bob Childers, Jimmy LaFave, The Great Divide, Cross Canadian Ragweed, Jason Boland & The Stragglers, and Stoney LaRue.
In 2021, Crutchmer covered the Turnpike Troubadours' comeback for Rolling Stone,[5] and later previewed forthcoming 2024 shows by the band.[6]
His 2023 book, The Motel Cowboy Show, covers Americana music in the American West that began with cowboy poetry and lives on today in artists like Reckless Kelly, Micky and the Motorcars, and Ned LeDoux.[7]
