Josh Evans (music producer)

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

Josh Evans is an American record producer, mixer, engineer and musician. He is known for his work with artists such as Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Brandi Carlile, and Chris Cornell.

In 2020, Evans produced and mixed Pearl Jam’s eleventh studio album, Gigaton, which debuted as the #1 rock album in the world[1], and in the top 5 in the Billboard 200 chart.[2]

Career[edit]

Josh Evans graduated from the University of Washington in 2002 with a degree in Comparative History of Ideas and Digital and Experimental Arts.

Evans got his start at Studio X (formerly t) in Seattle, WA. While at Studio X, Evans assisted on numerous orchestral film and video game scoring sessions, and also sessions with artists such as Dr. John, Van Morisson, Biffy Clyro, George Duke and The Tragically Hip.

In 2008, Evans began touring with Pearl Jam as a keyboard technician and working for the band full-time as a guitar technician and audio engineer.

In 2010, Evans began touring with Soundgarden as a guitar tech for Kim Thayil and Chris Cornell[3]

In 2012, Evans engineered the demos, and later the studio sessions, for Soundgarden’s King Animal album.

In 2016, Evans toured with Temple of the Dog in 2016 as Chris Cornell’s monitor engineer.

In 2017, Evans began working with Pearl Jam on their 11th studio album, Gigaton.

On March 17, 2020, Gigaton was released to critical acclaim.[4] and became the number one selling album in Rock in its first week[1]

In 2020, Evans mixed Pearl Jam’s Gigaton in Dolby Atmos, becoming the first new album released by the Universal music group in the Atmos immersive surround sound format[5]. The Atmos version of the album was also released as a “visual experience” on Apple TV.

Pearl Jam's Gigaton:[edit]

Evans has recently received critical praise for his contributions to Pearl Jam’s album Gigaton:

The New York Times wrote: “Abetted by Evans, Pearl Jam lets its songs billow outward with neo-psychedelic richness: clouds of vocal harmony or guitar tones, subtle bulwarks of keyboard, impulsive instrumental passages, playgrounds of percussion.”[6]

Variety writer Jonathan Cohen wrote: “Pearl Jam’s first album in nearly seven years, “Gigaton,” released today, is the veteran Seattle band’s most satisfying and adventurous work since the Clinton administration. For that, much credit must go to producer Josh Evans”[7]

Kerrang! writer George Garner gave the album a perfect score, and wrote: "it's Pearl Jam's most incensed album since 2006. It's their most musically inventive since 1998. And, by virtue of its themes, it is their most gravely needed of their entire career. It is, in short, a triumph". Garner also noted that Gigaton "often zips along so quickly that on first listen it's easy to miss the details that make it so special".[8]

In it’s four star review, Rolling Stone writes: “…there’s an attention to sonic and emotional detail, a focus on musical light and shade, which reflects the album’s lengthy gestation... Gigaton is a testament to how Pearl Jam’s own deeply held dissatisfaction still burns brighter than ever.”[9]
