During the first HOH competition, Josh won safety for the week after retrieving a golden apple, at the expense of his teammates' chances at winning HOH. On Day 17, Paul nominated him for eviction. On Day 20, Paul chose to save Josh with the POV and replaced him with Cody. On Day 31, Jessica nominated Josh for eviction and kept the nominees the same. On Day 44, Josh won HOH. On Day 45, he nominated Elena and Mark for eviction. On Day 79, Josh won the POV during the second Double Eviction and decided to not use it. On Day 79, Josh won his second HOH. On Day 80, he nominated Alex and Kevin. On Day 84, Josh cast the tie-breaker vote to evict Alex. On day 86, Martinez won the final HOH of the season and decided to evict Christmas. Moments later, Josh was crowned the winner of Big Brother 19, and the sole winner of the $500,000 prize, by a vote of 5-4, receiving the votes of jury members Alex Ow, Jason Dent, Mark Jansen, Elena Davies and Cody Nickson. Martinez is the first Hispanic-American winner in the show's history. Josh is the third Hispanic person to make finals after Ivette Corredero and Natalie Martinez.
