Joshua Bondo (born 25 February 1978) is a Botswana football referee. Nicknamed "The Sprinter" for his impressive fitness and speed on the pitch, he has been a prominent official in the Botswana Premier League and was a full international referee for FIFA from 2007 to 2023.
Refereeing career
Bondo began his refereeing career in 2001, quickly establishing himself in domestic football within Botswana.[1]
In 2007, he was named to the FIFA International Referees List. Over the next decade and a half, Bondo became one of the most recognizable referees in the Confederation of African Football (CAF) region, regularly selected for high-profile matches in the CAF Champions League, CAF Confederation Cup, and COSAFA Cup tournaments.[2]
On the international stage, Bondo was selected to officiate at multiple Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) finals, including the 2017 tournament in Gabon, the 2019 tournament in Egypt, and the 2021 tournament in Cameroon. He also officiated several FIFA World Cup qualification matches across Africa.
Personal life
Bondo was born in Chinoyingoni, Botswana. Before devoting his time full-time to refereeing and sports instruction, he served in the Botswana Defence Force (BDF) and was an avid track sprinter during his youth, which earned him his long-standing nickname among African football supporters.
