Joshua Haupt, (born April 29, 1986) is an entrepreneur, cannabis grower, author, and self-made millionaire. Haupt has founded multiple cannabis companies and is known for spreading growing and cultivation knowledge throughout the industry. Haupt is best known for the successful grower's guide, Three A Light. He also served as the Chief Cultivation Officer, Chief Revenue Officer, and Chief Operating Officer at the cannabis consultancy firm, Medicine Man Technologies (now Schwazze) as well as owner of the two growing operations known as Superfarm and Tree House in Denver, Colorado. Haupt also founded the cannabis nutrient company, Success Nutrients, as well as the publishing company, Pono Publishing. According to the medical cannabis hub, RXLeaf, many have nicknamed Haupt the “Steve Jobs of cannabis” for his major impact on cannabis growing and the cannabis industry.

Today, Haupt continues his entrepreneurial career with the development of Plant Love Naturals, a health and wellness brand that draws on the healing properties of CBD, and Artsy Cannabis, a cannabis company focused on the cultivation process, social consciousness, and supporting the artistic community in any of its operating locations.

Early Life

Joshua Haupt was born in Kauai, Hawaii and grew up in Grand Junction, Colorado.[1] Haupt grew up in a hard-working family who taught him about the value of dedication. Haupt has noted that he was influenced by his family's entrepreneurial spirit. An impactful memory for Haupt was when his father quit his job to start a business and vowed never to work again as an employee. Haupt has said his father instilled in him the message that “There is no elevator to success. You've gotta take the stairs.” [2]

Epilepsy

Haupt suffered his first seizure at 14 while eating breakfast and was diagnosed shortly after with epilepsy. Haupt began taking medication for his condition; however, he experienced strong side effects such as hair loss and weight gain as well as poor tolerability. Haupt stated, “When I was about 22 years old, I stepped into realizing that I can no longer continue running into these side effects.”[3]

Cannabis Grower

Haupt began growing cannabis at the age of 15. Haupt’s parents were concerned about his well-being. Despite their reservations, they allowed his cannabis use and did not object. From an early age, Haupt enjoyed gardening. This childhood passion made for an easy transition into growing cannabis. Many rejected his claims of medicinal benefits from cannabis; however, it proved to be a safe and effective medicine for him. [4] At age 24, Haupt was off of all his medications and relied on cannabis and CBD exclusively to treat his symptoms. Cannabis and CBD have successfully treated Haupt’s epilepsy up to the present day. His early adoption of cannabis cultivation provided the bedrock for his subsequent journey into the cannabis industry. [3]

Personal Life

Haupt lives in Denver, Colorado. He is currently married, has three daughters, and is currently working hard to create two new brands in the cannabis and CBD industry. Haupt remains seizure-free to this day and continues to use cannabis to treat his epilepsy. Haupt continues to share his knowledge and findings throughout the community.

Haupt no longer works directly with Schwazze and its affiliates but remains a significant shareholder in the company. Since leaving the company in 2020, Haupt has launched two companies, Plant Love Naturals and Artsy Cannabis, upholding his status in the cannabis growing community.

Career

Early Career

Haupt moved to Breckenridge, Colorado as a young adult. There he started his first company, Tall T Productions, a ski-inspired clothing line.[5]

During his time snowboarding in Breckenridge, Haupt also worked with locals and friends to advance his and others’ cannabis growing practices. While in Breckenridge, Haupt honed his cultivation practice, eventually developing a method by which he could grow three pounds of cannabis per grow light. [4]

Three A Light

After developing his cultivation practice, Haupt wrote the highly successful book, Three A Light. Three A Light was released in 2015. The guide offers a nine-step cultivation method designed to produce three pounds of cannabis per grow light. [4]

Before Haupt, growing three pounds a light was unheard of or deemed impossible in the growers’ community. The singular cultivation guide is designed for amateur growers all the way to expert ones. "There's a 5-7 year learning curve with growing," Haupt says, "and it dawned on me that I should write a book because there was nothing else out there that taught you how to grow from A-Z.”[6]

Schwazzing

The most impactful step is a technique Haupt refers to as “schwazzing.” Haupt and his friends created the term as they perfected the method. “Schwazzing” is the practice of removing every fan leaf from the cannabis plant throughout the first phase of flowering.[7]

“You’re looking for optimum light penetration through the canopy,” Haupt said in an interview with High Times. “Not only that, you’re refocusing the plant’s energy toward the top to generate new growth. When you schwazze your plants, you’re removing a lot of their ability to uptake sugar. The fan leaves are sugar factories and feed the flower. When they’re removed, you now have to feed the plant all that sugar and the micro/macro nutrients.”[8]

Sales & Publishing Company

Haupt self-published Three A Light through a publishing company he founded called Pono Publications. The book currently retails at $300 per copy. In 2016, Three A Light accumulated sales of over roughly $1,000,000 and had sold over 4000 books. Today, Schwazze, the company to which Haupt sold rights to the book, has sold more than 2,000 copies of the guide. At the time of ownership, Haupt offered a 100 percent money-back guarantee on every copy and personally answers questions to all purchasers of the book.

Pono Publications was later absorbed by Medicine Man Technologies, now Schwazze.[9]

Success Nutrients

While developing his methodologies through the years, Haupt created a product line of horticultural supplements known as Success Nutrients. The nutrients are specifically designed for Three A Light growing; however, they can also be used for soil and hydroponic gardens.

While developing his methodologies through the years, Haupt created a product line of horticultural supplements known as Success Nutrients. The company’s nutrients were specifically designed for the Three A Light growing process but they can also be used for soil and hydroponic gardens.

Haupt feels Success Nutrients are vital to properly complete the “schwazzing” growing process. Haupt has stated, "We can't advocate people schwazzing if they aren't feeding them our nutrients.” Haupt has also said, “People walk in and think I killed my whole room - but then, you can see what happens on the time-lapse. That's where Success Nutrients comes in." [2]

In 2016 the unaudited sales for Success Nutrients totaled $779,292.

Growing Facilities

Joshua Haupt also founded the Colorado growing facilities Superfarm and Treehouse that grow and sell wholesale cannabis. All of the cannabis gardens use the Three A Light method and are successful. “Pretty much 90 percent of the strains we’ve worked with,” says Haupt, “We’ve been able to achieve three a light.”

Superfarm in Denver has 16 cultivation chambers. Even with the size of the indoor farm, Three A Light’s method is reported to prevent cross-contamination. Each chamber is suited to deal with each plant’s individual needs such as environment and temperature. Each room houses around 36 lights. Every nine days, Superfarm’s cannabis plants are ready to harvest. Superfarm harvests on a seventy-day schedule.[10]

“Our goal at our facilities,” states the company. “is to cultivate the most efficiently grown pounds of top-shelf indoor cannabis!” [10] The Three A Light method atmosphere and practices have given Superfarm the reputable reputation it currently possesses.

Schwazze

In 2017 Haupt sold Pono Publications and Success Nutrients to the cannabis consulting firm, Medicine Man Technologies (now Schwazze) for 7 million shares in the company. Haupt currently owns 4.4 million shares in Schwazze that are currently worth about $9 million according to SEC filings from May of 2017. Schwazze is a penny stock that trades on the over-the-counter market.

Schwazze is located in the industrials sector and is in the business services industry. “The Company offers supply chain, processing, cultivation, cloning, and seed propagation, facility design, feasibility, and dispensary consulting services.”
