Josser

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

A Josser is someone who works in a circus but was not born nor married into a circus family. In Australia, the term is also used on occasion to refer to a clergyman.[citation needed]

Circus

Circus jossers are not rare, but few remain in circus for any long period of time. Jossers are rarely found in the upper hierarchy of a professional circus, as they are usually regarded as having lower status than those of circus descent. Jossers are at a disadvantage in modern circus, because they usually have not been raised in a circus discipline, or trained to the extent of their circus-born coworkers. Amateur acts (e.g. amateur clowns) are not considered Jossers unless they have worked in larger scale circus.
