Jost Kobusch
Jost Kobusch (* 3. August 1992 in Bielefeld) is a German solo extreme mountaineer, book author and speaker.
Life[edit]
Kobusch was born in Bielefeld and grew up in the small town of Borgholzhausen. He has five siblings, triplets and twins - all sisters. His parents divorced at an early age. He therefore grew up with his father, a carpenter, and in the care of different au pairs. He discovered his passion for climbing at the age of twelve in the climbing group of his school, where he was also able to overcome his fear of heights.
Kobusch completed high school at the top of his grade before doing a voluntary military service in the mountaineering troops of Berchtesgaden. He has been studying Sports Engineering at the University of Technology in Chemnitz since 2016.
Ascents[edit]
Mount Kenya[edit]
(5199 metres, August 2011)
At the age of 18, Kobusch travelled to Kenya as part of a partner school programme. He was the only participant to extend the one-month stay and used that time to organise his first expedition. His destination was Mount Kenya, the second highest mountain in Africa. However, due to very bad weather conditions Kobusch had to turn around just below the main summit.
Mont Blanc[edit]
(4810 metres, Ende November 2012)
At the age of 20, Kobusch reached the summit of Mont Blanc (4810 metres), the highest mountain in Europe, by himself. This was his first four-thousand-metre peak in the Alps and it marks the beginning of his minimalistic approach.
Ama Dablam[edit]
(6814 metres, April 2014)
Kobusch is considered to be the youngest solo conqueror of Ama Dablam, the "Nepalese Matterhorn". Aged 21, it was his first major ascent in the Himalayas. Originally, he had planned an ascent of Cho Oyu, but this failed due to a lack of funding.
Lhotse[edit]
(8516 metres, April 2015)
In the morning hours of 25 April 2015, Kobusch was in the base camp of Mount Everest at an altitude of about 5360 metres preparing his ascent of Lhotse. While he was having breakfast together with other mountaineers, an earthquake hit the area resulting in an avalanche that killed 22 climbers and injured many more. Unaware of the magnitude of this disaster, Kobusch filmed the scene with his smartphone. Together with others he managed to rescue himself behind tents and a boulder. Within a few days, the two and a half minute film clip reached more than 20 million views on the video platform Youtube. It reached many more people by being used worldwide in television and documentaries.
Annapurna Himal[edit]
(8091 metres, May 2016)
On 1 May 2016, at the age of 23, Kobusch became the youngest German mountaineer to climb Annapurna 1 (8091 metres). He was the eighth German to reach this summit. He did it on his own and without the help of supplementary oxygen.
Nangpai Gosum II[edit]
(7296 metres, October 2017)
The Nangpai Gosum II (7296 metres) was considered to be one of the highest unclimbed mountains in the world until Kobusch's first ascent. It took him four days from the base camp at 5090 metres to the summit. On the way to the advanced base camp (5560 metres) he first hiked a glacier stretching over 8.5 kilometres. Via Camp 1 (6400 metres) and Camp 2 (6840 metres) he reached the summit on 3 October 2017. The Nepalese government officially recognized Kobusch's first ascent and has recorded in the Himalayan Database, the largest archive of Himalayan mountaineering.
