The Journal of Dramatic Theory and Criticism is a biannual academic journal published in print and online by the University of Kansas Department of Theatre & Dance, with support from the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. It was founded in 1986 by John Gronbeck-Tedesco and Paul Newell Campbell.[2] The journal publishes articles on dramatic theory and criticism, book reviews, and "the relationship between theory and theatre practice."[3]

In the inaugural issue of the journal, founding editor John Gronbeck-Tedesco wrote "Naturally, one issue cannot represent all the interests capable of being lumped under the journal's name. I hope that this new publication will be sufficiently long-lived to suggest over time the diversity of what our contributors and subscribers are thinking about in the name of dramatic theory and criticism."[4]

The University of Kansas provides free electronic access to issues of the journal published before 2011. Issues published after 2011 are available through a print subscription or Project Muse.[1]
