Jovan Gec

Jovan Gec (Serbian Cyrillic: Јован Гец; Pirot, Ottoman Empire, 22 July 1893 - Belgrade, Serbia, Yugoslavia, 9 January 1962) was a Serbian actor, director and playwright. [1] He was married to actress Mila Grujić Gec.

Biography

Jovan Gec was born in Pirot, where he finished primary school. He finished six grades of high school in several places in Serbia where his father Franjo, who was a veterinarian, served. He worked briefly in a pharmacy to study to be a pharmacy assistant. He started his acting career in Skopje on 9 December 1909 with a traveling theater troupe Ljubomir Rajičić Čvrga. In a short time, he changed several traveling theaters, and from 1912-1913, he was a member of the Toša Jovanović Theater Company.[2]

He took part in the First World War, was twice wounded, then captured and taken to Ashah to a prison camp, where he performed in a camp theater. After escaping from the camp, he lived in Vienna for some time. After the First World War, he was an actor in various theaters: Serbian National Theater in Novi Sad, theaters in Sarajevo, Split, Zagreb, Cetinje, Skopje, and the National Theater in Belgrade. He also occasionally worked as a director. During the war, he participated in the "Center for Humor".[3] He retired on 31 December 1950. [4]

In the First World War and between the two world wars, he was awarded the Miloš Obilić Gold Medal for Courage, Order of the Yugoslav Crown IV order and Royal Order of Saint Sava, and much later in life, the Order of Labor.[5]

He also wrote dramatic texts. He wrote the first play "The Path" in 1923. He wrote the comedy "My Children" with Vlado Mijušković, which was performed in 1939. "Black and White Gypsies", "Grandpa for Sale", "Angry Theophilos", "Casanova", "Forced Daughter", "Mascot", Čukur-česma and other pieces were also performed on the stage.[6]
