Jovan Young
Jovan Ashley Young (born 17 April 1988) is a British boxer.[1], Actor, Model, Motivational Speaker and Personal Trainer.
Early Life and Education
Young was born to Jamaican parents, raised in South East London. He studied at Sedgehill School.
Career
Young started boxing in 2005 when he joined the London boxing club Fitzroy Lodge, an amateur boxing club led by British boxing coach Mick Carney MBE[2][3]. He started to gain traction after winning his first London title at the ABA National Championships in 2009. Young was then invited to compete with the Jamaican National Boxing team in 2011, and fought his way to becoming the number one champion in the Jamaican Nationals, leading him to be assigned team captain.[4]
This led to Young being strategically selected for the Commonwealth Games and World amateur championships, becoming a Bronze medalist in The Central American and Caribbean Games (CAC) and Silver Medalist in the Pan American Games Qualifiers.[5]After international amateur success, and suffering the death of his coach & mentor Mick Carney MBE, Young relocated to the United States and turned professional.[6]
In 2012 Young travelled to Punta del Este in Uruguay for his professional debut, against Sao Paulo Brazil’s Gilson Silva. An early finish was in order with Young stopping Silva in the third round. He then travelled to Charlotte, North Carolina to face Ivan Burke. Young again finished early, stopping his opponent in the second round. For his next opponent, Young travelled to Winston-Salem, where he took on local Cruiserweight Willie Bookman. As with his previous outings, Young stopped his opponent early. This time however, it only took two minutes and thirty-four seconds of the first round to beat Bookman. Two weeks later, Young made the relatively short trip to Columbia, South Carolina, where he faced, and beat Marlin Washington on points. Back in action shortly after, Young faced Atlanta Georgia’s Yuwshua Zadok in Greensboro, North Carolina. After six gruelling all-action rounds against Zadok, the judges decided on a draw. By 2013 he earned international popularity and critical acclaim with an unbeaten record.[7]
Young has since been a local influence, giving advice to MP’s in The House of Commons to influence policy[8] and actively campaigning for his community. By 2017, he secured a lead supporting role as an actor in the web series "Growin' Pains."[9]
Young continues his athletic and mentoring career,[10]speaking at popular self-development events [11].
