Juan Antonio Muñoz Pérez (Barcelona, November 11, 1965), better known as Juan Muñoz, is a Spanish comedian, actor, impressionist, and film director who was part of the comedy duo Cruz y Raya, along with his partner José Mota.

Biography[edit]

Early life[edit]

He was born in Barcelona on November 11, 1965. Muñoz began his career as a comedian at a very young age. Even in school at the Salesianos, he performed under the stage name "Super Agent Billy," imitating teachers and staging small humorous plays. He made some appearances on children's programs on Radio Reloj, Radio Miramar, and Radio Poble Sec, such as "Los chicos de Mario" or "Niñolandia."

Later, he recorded his first cassette of jokes and imitations under the artistic name "Sergio TV," which was distributed almost exclusively through gas stations and small stores.

Meeting José Mota and early radio and television work[edit]

He met José Mota during military service in 1985, with whom he immediately connected and formed an unconditional friendship that continues to this day. After completing military service, they decided to live together in Madrid, forming the duo Cruz y Raya. They gradually performed in nightclubs in the capital with the show Cien personajes en busca de humor, gaining enormous fame among the public. After participating in several radio programs such as La bisagra with Javier Sardá, Muñoz and Mota began working on television in 1989 on the program Pero ¿esto qué es?, a variety show that aired on La Primera on Friday nights, where they parodied the dynamics of a radio station that combined current events or radio hits, under the slogan "Cruz y Raya, the station that, although it owes, never keeps silent."

Solo career[edit]

Outside of his work in Cruz y Raya, Muñoz has also developed a career in film. As an actor, he appeared in the film Ni se te ocurra... dejar de verla in 1990.

He also lent his voice to the dubbing of the film Goomer and as the main protagonist in the animated films of Shrek, whose original voice was by actor Mike Myers. But his most important works have been as director and actor in the films ¡Ja me maaten...! in 2000 and Ekipo Ja in 2007, in which he played the role of Juan de Dios, a gypsy that he also portrayed in the television sketches of Cruz y Raya.

Separation of Cruz y Raya[edit]

In November 2007, the separation of Cruz y Raya was officially announced, ending 22 years of joint career with José Mota along with other collaborators of their programs like Paco Collado or Patricia Rivas. Although Muñoz never denied that there may have been some tension between them at specific moments, the reason for the separation was that Muñoz wanted to leave television to dedicate himself to his family, whom he had abandoned during the years of success. Tired of the immense work involved in writing, directing, and starring in a weekly television program, to which he had devoted much of his career as a couple, Juan then decided to focus his career on theater, to have more time for his loved ones. As he stated years later, he wanted to take a break from the duo, and José Mota chose to continue.

Solo career trajectory[edit]

In 2011, he made a pilot episode for his own program in the style of La hora de José Mota, called Esta noche... Juan Muñoz. The series was intended to be a succession of sketches with the same actors who collaborated in La hora de José Mota, such as Enrique Villén or Manuel Tallafé. However, the series did not go beyond that pilot, and it was never broadcast.

He served as a collaborator in José Mota presenta..., playing various roles, but the most characteristic was that of Juan de Dios from his previous stint with Cruz y Raya.

From 2016 to 2017, he was part of the contestant group in the fifth edition of Tu cara me suena, where he finished 7th with 235 points.

Currently, Muñoz also performs humorous monologues and stand-up comedy at various venues and theaters in Spain, thus returning to his origins in comedy.
