Political career

Rivera was elected Deputy for Chillán and San Carlos for the 1897–1900 legislative period. He served as Second Vice President of the Chamber of Deputies from 21 December 1898 to 2 June 1899, was a member of the War and Navy Committee and participated in the Conservative Committee during the 1897–1898 parliamentary recess.[1]

He was reelected for the 1900–1903 legislative period and again served as Second Vice President of the Chamber, from 6 March 1901 to 10 May 1902. During this term, he was a member of the Ecclesiastical Affairs Committee and a replacement member of the War and Navy Committee.[1]

After an interruption between 1903 and 1906, Rivera returned to the Chamber as Deputy for Chillán and San Carlos for the 1906–1909 legislative period and was reelected for 1909–1912. During both terms, he served on the Government and Colonization Committee.[1]

Rivera died in December 1909 while serving as deputy. José María Pinto joined the Chamber on 18 January 1910 as his replacement.[1]
