He is also a European pioneer in the field of biblio/poetry therapy, an essayist, a critic, a poet and an aphorist. He has written, co-written and edited several publications, mainly in Finnish, English and Swedish.

Career

Ihanus has belonged to the staff of the University of Helsinki since 1982 (PhD in 1990) and he was a Senior Lecturer in Psychology until the beginning of 2021. He also has the title of Docent (Associate Professor) in Psychology and in Cultural Psychology (at the University of Helsinki), in Art Education and Art Psychology (at Aalto University) and in the History of Science and Ideas (at the University of Oulu). He has been a visiting scholar at the London School of Economics and Political Science, at the University of Cambridge and at Tallinn University. He has written 20 books and edited 14 books. He has also published several scientific and popular articles, essays and reviews. As a fiction writer, he has co-written two dialogical books of poetry with a Finnish poet Jyrki Pellinen and published his own works of aphorisms (a collection On the edge in English, À la lisière in French), poems (a collection On the Road to Narva the Kabbalist, connected with Kabbalistic tradition, and The birch and the steam, about the Finnish sauna tradition) and short prose. His total of publications is over 540.[1]

Research interests

In his academic work, Ihanus has focused on the history of psychology, psychoanalysis and anthropology, the psychohistory of especially Russia and Russian leadership, theoretical issues of psychoanalysis and neuropsychoanalysis, and the psychological study of literature and art. He published a large-scale study of the Finnish-born, internationally renowned social anthropologist Edward Westermarck.[2] His interest in psychohistory, psychobiography, leadership studies and political psychology is manifest in several articles, ranging from Imperial Russia and child rearing to recent Russian issues and Vladimir Putin’s macho pose.[3] [4]

Ihanus has also been active in developing the theory and practice of biblio/poetry therapy and writing therapy. He was a co-founder, in 1981, and the first president of the Finnish Association for Biblio/Poetry Therapy, the first such organization in Europe.[5] His work combines the philosophical, historical and cultural aspects of the transformative functions of words, literature, writing, and biblio/poetry therapy, approaching the subject through narrative and cultural psychology, storytelling, and shareable meaning making.[6] He is also a scientific chief of the training programs in that field.

Besides academic interests, he is engaged in writing literary essays, critiques, poems, short prose, aphorisms and in translating into Finnish (he has translated works, for example, by Georg Christoph Lichtenberg, E. M. Cioran, Karl Kraus, and Juliet Mitchell).
