Julian Bunetta
Julian Bunetta is a Grammy-nominated, Ivor Novello award-winning[1] songwriter and producer from Los Angeles, best known for his work with One Direction.
Early life and education[edit]
Bunetta is the son of the drummer and producer Peter Bunetta, known for producing for Donna Summer, Michael Bolton, The Temptations, and Smokey Robinson, among others. He studied composition and production at Berklee College of Music prior to obtaining his first publishing deal with Warner/Chappell music.[2]
Career[edit]
Bunetta has written and produced for a wide variety of commercial artists, including Maroon 5, Jason Derulo, Little Big Town, Thomas Rhett, Flo Rida, Leona Lewis, Hillary Duff, Lupe Fiasco, and Big & Rich. He also had a central part in developing Fifth Harmony, one of the most successful girl groups of the 2010s, on the hit television series The X Factor. He continued to develop and serve as executive producer for the group in subsequent years. He is the co-founder of Family Affair Productions, along with his father Peter and younger brother Damon.[3]
With One Direction[edit]
He is best known for playing a pivotal role working with One Direction.[4][5] From 2012 to 2015 Bunetta wrote and produced over 40 songs with the successful boy band, including the singles "Story of My Life, "Drag Me Down," "Night Changes," "Steal My Girl," "Best Song Ever," "History." “For three years, this was our schedule,” Bunetta says. “We did X Factor October, November, December. Took off January. February, flew to London. We’d gather ideas with the band, come up with sounds, hang out. Then back to L.A. for March, produce some stuff, then go out on the road with them in April. Get vocals, write a song or two, come back for May, work on the vocals, and produce the songs we wrote on the road. Back to London in June-ish. Back here for July, produce it up. Go back on tour in August, get last bits of vocals, mix in September, back to X Factor in October, album out in November, January off, start it all over again.”[citation needed]
He has also contributed to solo projects by One Direction members Niall Horan and Harry Styles.[citation needed]
Awards[edit]
Bunetta contributed four tracks to Thomas Rhett’s 2019 Grammy[6] and CMA[7] nominated album Center Point Road. The album was the only country album to debut at the top of the Billboard 200 in 2019.[8] In 2019 he also won a BMI award for Niall Horan’s “On the Loose”[9] and an Ivors award for “These Days”, performed by Rudimental featuring Jess Glyne, Macklemore, and Dan Caplen.[10]
