Julian Looman (born March 5, 1985) is an Austrian-Dutch actor,[4] known for various television and film roles, including a lead role in BBC One drama The Mallorca Files.[5] He is also known for various roles in theatre in Austria, Germany, Switzerland, and the Netherlands.[6][7]
Biography
Born to a Dutch father and an Austrian mother,[8] Looman is fluent in Dutch, German, and English. He also speaks French and Italian at a lower level of fluency.[9][10] He resides in Vienna with his partner, Dutch musical theatre actress and singing coach Annemieke van Dam, and their two children.[11][12][13][14]
Career
Looman's theatrical roles include Ethan Girard in The Full Monty (musical), the lead role of Dutch resistance fighter Erik Hazelhoff Roelfzema in Soldier of Orange (musical), Joe Gillis in Sunset Boulevard (musical), Pharoah in Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, the Emcee in Cabaret (musical), Count Vronsky in Anna Karenina (musical), and Sir Dennis Galahad in Spamalot.[15][16][17][18][19][20]
Looman has played various roles in both Dutch and German-speaking television productions, including the role of Austrian politician Johann Gudenus in The Ibiza Affair and parts in Der Pass and Marie fängt Feuer.[21] Looman's English-speaking television roles include the lead role of German police detective Max Winter in The Mallorca Files and the part of agent Gerhard in Emily in Paris.[22][23] Looman has been cast as Frederic Duverger in upcoming thriller series Constellation (TV series).[24]
Looman's film roles include the male lead in Dick Maas' 2016 feature Prooi, and the part of Jan in Nightlife (2020).[25]
Awards
Looman's role as Austrian politician Johann Gudenus in the television series The Ibiza Affair earned him a nomination for a Romy (TV award).[26] His role as Emcee in Cabaret won him the Kurt Sieder award for Best Actor and Best Newcomer at the Aachen Theatre Awards in 2014.[27][28] As a member of the cast of Nightlife, Looman was part of the special mention for the film's cast ensemble made at the 2020 Monte-Carlo Film Festival of Comedy.[29]
