Julian Ronald Field (born February 1961) is a British entrepreneur and engineer known for his work in early e-commerce and solar-powered transportation. He was the founder of Furniture123.co.uk, which is recognized as the first online furniture retailer in Europe,[1] and serves as the founding chairman of Solar Transport Systems, the developers of the INTI solar car.[2]
Early life and education
Field was born in Argentina and raised in Venezuela. He moved to the United States to attend the Florida Institute of Technology, where he graduated in 1984 with a bachelor's degree in electrical and computer engineering. During his studies, he was instrumental in the creation of FITV, the university's student-run television station.[1]
In 1989, he earned an MBA from INSEAD in Fontainebleau, France.[1]
Career
Early career
Field began his career as a senior field engineer with Schlumberger from 1985 to 1988, working on international oil and gas assignments in Algeria, Nigeria, and Gabon. Following his MBA, he served as European Marketing Director at Courtaulds (1989–1995), managing a $230 million aerospace paints and sealants business. He later became Managing Director of Tomlinson Furniture Ltd., an international furniture manufacturer.[2]
E-commerce
In 1999, Field founded Furniture123.co.uk, the United Kingdom's first online furniture retailer. He led the company as CEO for thirteen years, building it into a multi-million-pound operation before selling it to Buy It Direct, Ltd. in 2012.[1][3]
Solar Transport Systems
In 2013, Field and his son, James Field, founded Solar Transport Systems in Yorkshire, England. The company was established to develop practical, road-legal solar vehicles. Their first prototype, the SPV1, was completed in 2014.[2]
Following a decade of development, the company moved its headquarters to Florida in 2023. In June 2025, Field unveiled the production prototype of the INTI, a solar-powered neighborhood electric vehicle, at the Florida Tech Vertex Center.[4]
Board memberships and philanthropy
Field is a member of the Florida Tech International Advisory Board, where he mentors students and alumni. In 2021, he was the featured speaker for the F. Alan Smith Distinguished Lecture Series, where he discussed the future of solar-powered mobility.[2]
Personal life
Field is an avid sailor and completed a transatlantic crossing in 2005. He currently resides in the United Kingdom.[1]
