Julian Unthank

Julian Unthank (born 14 January 1969) is an English screenwriter. Born in Tidworth, he has written for both TV and film. Unthank began his TV career writing on Family Affairs, The Bill and Robin Hood. He then wrote an award-winning short film called Love at First Sight starring John Hurt and Phyllida Law before writing New Tricks in 2012 and Doc Martin in 2013. He has since created his own show Queens of Mystery for Acorn TV.

Early Life and Education[edit]

Unthank was educated at John Hanson Community School, Andover, Hampshire before joining the Army as a boy soldier[1]. He then worked as an animal trainer on films Fierce Creatures, Mission Impossible & Mary Reilly. Unthank went on to study film at Bournemouth Film School where he graduated with distinction.

Career[edit]

Film[edit]

While at Bournemouth Film School, Unthank wrote a short film called Potemkin starring Charles Dance. In 2010 he wrote Love at First Sight a short film starring John Hurt and Phyllida Law. Love at First Sight won best film award at the Royal Television Society, Raindance and the Rushes Soho Short Film Festival. It was also shortlisted for an Academy Award.

His feature film scripts include Zed (August Entertainment), Sky Hammer (Rebellion Developments), Game Theory and Castle Rock (Zodiac Media). Unthank wrote Sword of Vengeance in 2015 which was directed by Jim Weedon.

Television[edit]

Unthank has written episodes the TV shows Family Affairs, The Bill, Robin Hood and New Tricks. Unthank has written for Doc Martin since 2013. In 2014 Unthank wrote storylines for Drugs, Inc..

In 2019, Unthank created and produced his own TV series Queens of Mystery which is about to begin filming the second series.

Unthank is a guest teacher at Winchester University, Southampton Solent University and Bournemouth University and is a visiting fellow at Southampton Solent University.
