Biography and achievements

Carlson grew up in Wellfleet, MA, where she maintains her family home.[20] Her mother Jocelyn Carlson Baltzell was an associate director at the New York Institute for the Humanities.[1] Her father Sten Carlson was a Yale-educated fisherman.[1] Carlson’s stepfather, the sociologist E. Digby Baltzell, is credited with coining the acronym WASP.[21] Carlson is a 1983 graduate of Brown University.[22] She has said that her design aesthetic was influenced by Cape Cod's Victorian houses and mid-20th-century modern cottages.[1] Early in her career she served as a copy editor at The New Yorker and a food and style editor at San Francisco Magazine.[22][23][24] She founded Remodelista in 2007 with Francesca Connolly, Janet Hall, and Sarah Lonsdale.[22][25][11][26] Carlson has said that the idea arose partly from her frustrating experiences finding furnishings to remodel her own homes, in “the early days of the Internet, and it wasn’t pretty.” During a kitchen project, “I spent far too much time on plumbing sites trying to figure out which faucet to spec,” she said. “I knew there had to be a better way.”[24] Remodelista was intended as an online sourcebook for renovators, at a time when many interior design magazines were struggling to stay in business.[2] Carlson's husband Josh Groves joined as publisher in 2008 (the couple lives in Brooklyn).[22] In 2009, Remodelista was named "best home design blog" by Apartment Therapy.[27] It was acquired by the San Francisco company Say Media in August 2011.[28] Christine Chang Hanway became UK Editor in 2014.[29] Carlson and Groves acquired it from Say Media in 2015. It has belonged to Realtor.com since 2016.[30] In 2011, Carlson and Michelle Slatalla created Remodelista’s sister website Gardenista, focusing on outdoor spaces.[5] In 2017, Remodelista launched another companion site, The Organized Home, in conjunction with the book Remodelista: The Organized Home: Simple, Stylish Storage Ideas for All Over the House.[6][19][31]
