Julie Ann Rieger (born August 7, 1969) is an American born advertising leader, business executive, educator and author.

She began her career in advertising working her way up from entry level roles to executive titles very quickly. A breakout moment was when she was voted by AdAge Magazine as one of the 'Women to Watch 2007..[1]' for her accomplishments in advertising which included managing the global spend for Hewlett Packard and winning 20th Century Fox for her employer - ZenithOptimedia.

20th Century Fox brought her over from the agency side in 2008[2]. Since that time, she has overseen record breaking movie revenues including Avatar, Deadpool, Deadpool 2, The X-Men trilogies, The Martian, The Ice Age movies, Planet of the Apes reboot and others. In her 10 years at Fox, her efforts oversaw the release of 221 movies totaling almost $14 billion in domestic US revenues[3]

In 2018, Julie published her book titled "The Ghost Photographer - A Hollywood Executive's True Story of Discovering the Real World of Make-Believe" that became a best seller.

Rieger is happily married to her partner Suzanne Taylor and they live in Sherman Oaks, California.

Her Family History[edit]

Julie Rieger was born at Walter Reed Army Hospital in Bethesda, Maryland on August 7, 1969. Her father, Lt Col. Thomas Locke Rieger, was a US Army officer, and her mother Margaret Ann Hadley, an oil/gas accountant. Her father was brought up in Ohio, Illinois and Michigan before joining the ROTC to graduate Michigan State and was one of two sons to Harold Rieger. Her mother was born in Kane, Pennsylvania to Arthur Hadley and Arlene Stewart. Julie's maternal family history started in Boston when Thomas Fairweather (B 1580 - D 1638) [4]immigrated from England to Boston in the Winthrop Fleet in 1630[5], joined the Church of Boston as member #101 in the winter of 1630, was made a freemason on the 14th May, 1634 and started the beginning of a 12 generation journey to current time.

She is the youngest of two children with brother, Tom Rieger (b October 23, 1966), who is a technology executive residing in Minnesota with wife Joanna and three children, Chloe (b 2003), Zachary (b 2005) and Sophia (b 2007).

Early Life[edit]

Rieger was born in the Washington DC area when her father was stationed in The Pentagon. Over the next 5 years she would move around when the family ended up in Ogden, Utah where her father was second in command in one of the largest US-based Defense Depots. In 1974 her parents divorced and her mother moved Julie and her brother to Okmulgee, Oklahoma where they lived with their maternal grandparents.

In 1975 Julie's mother remarried and the family settled in Miami, Oklahoma where she would remain through high school. In 1983 Julie went through two big life changing moments - her mother would divorce again and her father would pass away in Salt Lake City, Utah[6]

Because of her golf talents, she was recruited to play at Oklahoma University. After 2 years she would put down her clubs and transferred to Southern Methodist University in Dallas where she graduated with a degree in Advertising where she studied under the likes of Dr. Alice Kendrick[7].

Golf[edit]

Julie quickly excelled at golf within 2 years of taking up the sport. She would win the state junior championship in 1983 and 1986[8]. Her mother took her around the US playing in junior tournaments. In her freshman year of high school, she came in second for Oklahoma state championship by Melissa McNamara - whose mother Dale was the golf coach at Tulsa University and who went on to play in the LPGA[9]. She also was the top golfer to medal during her senior year of high school in 1987[10]. While at Oklahoma University she was the 1988 Blumenthal Award Winner, 1989 Academic All Big Eight recipient and a top OU finisher in 6 tournaments[11]

Career[edit]

After graduating from SMU, She served conventional media accounts at The Bloom Agency (now Publicis/Bloom) and Bozell Southwest, which is now Temerlin McClain. Julie then moved to San Francisco where she was with Winkler McManus and Foote Cone and Belding. In 1997 she moved back to Texas to be the head of Media for SicolaMartin (now Y&R Austin) [12]. Julie then returned to San Francisco to be SVP for Carat USA until 2002 when she took the EVP, West for ZenithOptimedia. While at Zenith, she ran the global marketing spend for clients like Hewlett-Packard. She was also the point person in winning the 20th Century Fox business for her agency. In 2008, 20th Century Fox then hired and relocated Julie away to be their Vice President, Marketing Planning[13]. In 2017, Fox promoted Julie to President, Chief Data Strategist & Head of Media working for the CEO Stacy Snider[14].

She is an adjunct professor at University of Southern California's School of Business and School of Cinematics and a professional speaker at conferences around data science and advertising.

In 2018 Rieger was inducted into the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences.

After the death of her mother from Alzheimers in 2011, she began a journey of healing that she documented and is now published in her autobiographically-themed book. It is published by Enliven Books and was released October 9, 2018 to become a best seller.
