Juliette Crane is an American visual artist, writer and entrepreneur based in Madison, Wisconsin.
Career
Juliette Crane grew up in Milwaukee, Wisconsin of the United States. She graduated from the University of Minnesota with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Painting and Journalism. Following graduation, she moved to Chicago to expand her writing and studio practice. Early in her career, and after her graduation, she began painting owls in mixed media and founded The School of Happy Painting.[1] [2]
Work
Crane considers her style to be between abstraction and figuration, utilizing techniques that involve building up layers of paint and mixed media to create colorful surfaces for her whimsical characters. Working primarily in mixed media with oils, acrylics, inks, pastel, pencil, pen and non-traditional materials like spray paint.[3] [4] [5] Crane chooses to allow the marks and patterns to overlap so the layers underneath show through as a way to mirror the human condition. Crane also writes fiction and non-fiction, and is a graduate of the Odyssey Writing Workshop.
In 2009, Crane founded The School of Happy Painting, a suite of online painting and creative business courses.
Using her social media platform as a vehicle for connection and discussion, Crane addresses creative process and practice as a form of healing.[6]
Her work is included in collections around the world and has been featured both in the United States and internationally.
