Jumping Jet is a puzzle platformer created by the indie game developer Vrglab (Arad bozorgmehr) in 2020. It is a game in which you play as a person stuck in an alternate universe in the sky and you have to solve puzzles and enter a portal to escape this world.
This game turned into the fastest growing game on itch.io and Game Jolt, gathering nearly 5 thousand views and nearly 2 thousand copies sold[1]
Vrglab, while making the game, thought about mod support, which he did not add until the 0.2.0 update. The reason being, "It was too hard to create the mod support while making the core of the game"[2]
Later on, Vrglab added new editions such as Jumping Jet (Community edition) and Jumping Jet (Pocket Edition).
Gameplay
Jumping Jet is a puzzle platformer in which you play as a guy stuck in an alternate universe in the sky, and they have to solve puzzles and enter a portal to escape this world. With monsters and mechanical killers set to kill them along the way, the player learns and meets different characters.
Plot
The player is a mechanical engineer that, while experimenting, accidentally opened a portal to an alternate universe like Earth but different. So they pick up their jet just in case if they need it and enter the portal, but what the player didn't know is when they enter the portal there would be no way back[3]
Development
Jumping Jet is a project Vrglab started to experiment with different platformer mechanics and accidentally made a bug that, instead of making the player jump, it made the player fly. This gave him the idea of a platformer in which one can fly, so he started a new project in Unity called "the evil there self," which later would be changed to[4]
Game Design
After Vrglab got the idea of a platformer in which you can fly, he took his game design book and started writing story, mechanics, and functions for the game. For the story, he used a previous game’s story and modified it to a new story. When he finished the bare bones of the story, he went to design the game’s look, so he started experimenting with different palettes and color patterns and styles, and he settled on pixel-art for the style and a cheerful color palette. All he needed was the pattern, which he created accidentally as well, and then there was only the sound design, which he started to work on in bfxr sound effect maker[5]
Writing
The game’s writing is mostly inspired by Will You Snail?, a game by Jonas Tyroller, and the comedy was also inspired by Mr. Bean[6]
Music
Since Vrglab went to musical school, he already knew how to play drums and piano. "For the music it was just a case of taking the old dusty keyboard out [and] play[ing] a couple of notes," Vrglab said[7]
