Jun Yang is a medical physicist, specializing in stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS), stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT), and robotic radiosurgery.
His research has included the development of the “red shell” concept for evaluating normal-tissue exposure in SBRT[1] and the investigation of stereotactic central/core ablative radiation therapy (SCART) for bulky tumors[2]. He was a co-author of the 2017 American Association of Physicists in Medicine (AAPM)–Radiosurgery Society Medical Physics Practice Guideline for SRS and SBRT,[3] and later co-authored AAPM Task Group Report 135.B on quality assurance for robotic radiosurgery.[4]
Education and career
Yang received a PhD in biomedical engineering from the University of Miami in 2006.[5] He subsequently worked in medical physics in the United States and participated in the establishment of Philadelphia CyberKnife.[5] He later served as chief physicist at Philadelphia CyberKnife and as chief physicist at Alliance Oncology from 2013 to 2019, while serving as a clinical associate professor at Drexel University.[6][7][8]
Yang served on the board of The Radiosurgery Society and chaired its Physics Committee from 2013 to 2021.[5]
Yang later returned to China and joined Foshan Fosun Chancheng Hospital, where he helped establish the hospital's Precision Oncology Diagnosis and Treatment Center and served as its director.[9][10]
Research
Yang's research has focused on stereotactic radiotherapy and medical physics. In 2010, he was the lead author of a study introducing the term "red shell" to describe a region of normal tissue surrounding an SBRT target that may receive radiation doses above tissue tolerance.[1] The concept was subsequently discussed in independent scholarly literature on radiobiological optimization in SBRT, which identified Yang and colleagues as having introduced the linear-quadratic-model-based “red shell” concept.[11]
He was one of the seven authors of the 2017 AAPM–RSS Medical Physics Practice Guideline 9.a for SRS and SBRT, which set out medical-physics practice guidance for stereotactic radiosurgery and stereotactic body radiation therapy.[3] [12] In 2025, he was also a co-author of AAPM Task Group Report 135.B, which provided updated quality-assurance guidance for robotic radiosurgery.[4]
In 2024, Yang was the lead author of a phase I study of SCART, a spatially heterogeneous radiotherapy approach investigated for bulky recurrent or metastatic tumors.[2] Subsequent peer-reviewed studies by other research groups have examined SCART. [13][14]
