Jung Rhythm (じゃんぐリズム) is a rhythm game for the Sega Saturn.
Plot[edit]
The game starts with a cutscene of the main character, Vanilla Essence, watching TV late at night. The program that she is watching is a music video of her idol, Mr. Chorking, performing one of his songs. As the night goes on, Vanilla falls asleep in front of the TV. Her pet cat changes the channel to Channel 7, and the game begins.
Jung Rhythm's plot consists of 7 stages, with one being hidden.
The first stage's cutscene begins with Vanilla running away from a violent man. Soon, she runs into a dead end, and the violent man is stopped from attacking her by Mr. Chorking. He then attacks the man, ultimately defeating him. Vanilla thanks Chorking for saving her, and the two share an intimate moment. The moment is then interrupted by Vanilla's alarm, and she gets up. She freaks out over the time, and her mother, Mama Essence, calls her down to the kitchen to get ready for school.
In Stage 2's cutscene, Vanilla is hanging out with her friends in class. Their names are Strawberry Milk, Patchin Pudding, and Rabbit Hair. Strawberry Milk mentions that she has a surprise, and the 3 friends guess what it is. After their incorrect guesses, she reveals the surprise is really a picture of Mr. Chorking. The 3 friends obsess over the picture and try to take a closer look at it, ultimately leading to Strawberry Milk dropping it onto the floor. A careless classmate walks over it, and Vanilla confronts her. The classmate's name is revealed to be Bavaroa Dorian, and she couldn't care less about ruining the picture. After a heated argument between the two, Dorian challenges Vanilla to a dance competition during recess. In the stage, Vanilla is initially unsure about the competition, but she is determined victorious.
In Stage 3's cutscene, the group of friends are now at a barn for their art class. Their assignment is to paint pictures of cows, and Vanilla is having some trouble with her painting. Her friends come over to ask to see her painting. Vanilla refuses to let them see it, but the canvas stand tips over, revealing her poor attempt at painting a cow. The 3 friends laugh at her painting, and Vanilla is embarrassed. She runs away to the barn balcony, and she cries out into the vast fields. An esteemed artist, Picasso, answers her cry for help and he offers to help her with her assignment. In the stage, Picasso and Vanilla take turns with the painting, and the final product's quality is determined based on how well the player does on the stage.
In Stage 4's cutscene, the 4 friends are out having a snack. Unsure of what to do, they all suggest activities. They play rock-paper-scissors, and Vanilla is determined the winner. They decide to go to a karaoke bar, and Strawberry Milk and Patchin Pudding sing a song together. Vanilla chooses a song to sing herself, and Rabbit Hair questions her ability. Vanilla is unsure, but the bar's karaoke master rises from under the stage. He offers to sing a duet with Vanilla. In the stage, Vanilla and the karaoke master sing together.
In Stage 5's cutscene, the 3 friends are enjoying a meal at a local fast food restaurant. Strawberry Milk arrives later, and she shows the gang a poster for an upcoming Mr. Chorking concert. The 3 friends are happy to hear this, but Vanilla is unsure if she has enough. Strawberry Milk mentions that the restaurant is hiring, and suggests that Vanilla works for some extra cash. The owner of the restaurant, named Coconut Pine, overhears their conversation. He encourages Vanilla to work in his shop. In the stage, Vanilla and Coconut Pine sing and dance as they work.
In Stage 6's cutscene, Vanilla sings a song in broken English. The scenes depict Vanilla getting ready for the concert, walking to the bus stop, and riding with her friends to the concert venue. In the venue, the announcer greets the audience and introduces Mr. Chorking, who is descending from the ceiling in a metal contraption. He tosses a rose into the crowd, and the announcer says that whoever it lands on, they will sing with Mr. Chorking. The rose lands on Vanilla, and she and her friends are overjoyed. The announcer and Mr. Chorking invite Vanilla on-stage, and she couldn't be happier. In the stage, Vanilla and Mr. Chorking perform one of his popular songs.
If the player doesn't do well enough on this stage, they will get the "Bad Ending". The cutscene depicts Vanilla waking up suddenly from her dream. She looks around her room in a confused daze, and she falls back to sleep.
However, if the player does good enough, they will unlock the hidden bonus stage. In Stage 7's cutscene, the crowd cheers for Vanilla and Mr. Chorking. He turns to Vanilla and he invites her to sing one last song. In the stage, Vanilla and Mr. Chorking perform a remix of the song heard in the beginning cutscene.
In the ending cutscene, Vanilla is seated at a booth. Surrounded by news reporters, they ask her questions about her performance with Mr. Chorking. Vanilla happily answers the questions, and she is then featured on the front page of the town's local newspaper.
The credits sequence is the music video featured in the beginning cutscene.
Gameplay[edit]
The gameplay is similar to that of PaRappa the Rapper and it's spin-off and sequel, but with minor differences.
