Jungsang Kim (born August 1, 1969) is a South Korean-American physicist and engineer who is the Schiciano Family Distinguished Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Duke University, where he also holds an appointment in physics and serves as associate director of the Duke Quantum Center[1] His research focuses on quantum information science, particularly trapped-ion quantum computing and photonics for scalable quantum networks. He is a co-founder of IonQ, a company developing trapped-ion quantum computers.[2]

Career

After completing his Ph.D. at Stanford University in 1999, Kim joined Lucent Technologies / Bell Laboratories as a Member of Technical Staff and later a Technical Manager. His work focused on large-scale MEMS optical cross-connects and advanced wireless systems.[3]

In 2004, he joined the faculty of Duke University, where he leads the Multifunctional Integrated Systems Technology (MIST) group and serves as Associate Director of the Duke Quantum Center.[4]

In 2015, Kim co-founded IonQ, a company developing trapped-ion quantum computers, and served as its Chief Technology Officer[5]
