JURI KOLL

“Juri Koll” (born 1961) is a San Francisco-born, Los Angeles-based curator, artist, and is the founder and director of the Venice Contemporary Institute of Art [1] also known as ViCA.

Biography

Koll began exhibiting the work of important artists such as photographer Edmund Teske at an early age, studied classical and film studies at University of California San Diego with Jean-Pierre Gorin and photographer and Fred Lonidier. He received his Bachelor of Fine Arts from the California Institute of the Arts his BFA from The California Institute of the Arts, where he was mentored by Jo Ann Callis and John Divola.

A member of the Directors Guild of America, Koll’s narrative features have appeared in over 70 film festivals; his first full-length feature was Jackson’s Hole, [2], a female-centered murder mystery.

Koll is also the director of the Venice Contemporary Institute of Art (ViCA) Fine Arts Film Festival [3]. The international festival, now in its 8th year, features art films and films about art.

He has produced and directed notable art world documentaries and worked with major museums and galleries, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, The National Gallery in Washington, D.C., the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, and the Museum of Modern Art in San Francisco. His work also appears in university, gallery, and museum collections including the Archives of American Art at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C., The University of New Mexico Art Museum, Brown University, College of DuPage Library, Corvallis Public Library, McAlester College, and Trinity University.

Koll has exhibited at and serves as an Advisory Board member of Beyond Baroque Literary Arts Center.

He opened the Venice Institute of Contemporary Art’s first galleries in San Pedro, and subsequently in downtown Los Angeles, in 2018.

As an instructor, he has taught fresco technique at The Getty Center and Villa in California’s Pacific Palisades, art at Brooks College in Long Beach, Calif., and film at Academy of Art University in San Francisco.

Exhibitions and Collections

Koll has curated and presented a wide range of exhibitions at museums such as the Chabot Museum in Rotterdam, Netherlands; the Wilhelm Morgner Haus Museum in Germany; the Long Beach Museum of Art Annex in Long Beach, Calif.; TAM (Torrance Art Museum) located in Torrance, Calif., and the Museum of Art and History located in Lancaster, Calif.; and OCCA, the Orange County Center for Contemporary Arts. He has also exhibited at art fairs including Photo LA; Art Palm Springs; the LA Art Show; and at galleries including Art Share L.A., Gallery 825, TAG, Gabba Gallery, and Muzeumm Gallery, as well as ViCA itself in downtown Los Angeles.
