JustFoodforDogs is an American dog food company headquartered in southern California. It markets itself as the pioneer of the fresh dog food category in the pet food industry.[1]
History
JustFoodforDogs was founded by Shawn Buckley in 2010. Buckley was inspired to create healthier food options for dogs after witnessing the positive effects of home-cooked meals on his own pets' health. Recognizing a gap in the market for fresh, human-grade pet food, Buckley established the world's first open-to-the-public pet food kitchen.[2]
The company quickly gained a loyal following among pet owners and veterinarians, leading to significant growth. In 2017, JustFoodForDogs received an investment from L Catterton, a prominent consumer-focused private equity firm, to support its expansion. This partnership enabled the company to broaden its reach, including opening exhibition kitchens in locations like New York City's Union Square Petco.
Today, JustFoodForDogs offers a range of products, including daily meals, veterinary support diets, custom formulations, and supplements, all aimed at enhancing the health and longevity of pets through balanced, whole-food nutrition.
Research
The company has partnered with universities to conduct human feeding trials and publish independent research in peer-reviewed scientific journals such as Frontiers in Veterinary Science, Journal of Animal Science, Translation Animal Science, Journal of Animal Physiology and Animal Nutrition, and Toxicology Communications on the following topics:
- Effects of a whole food diet on immune function and inflammatory phenotype in healthy dogs: A randomized, open-labeled, cross-over clinical trial[3]
- Nutrient digestibility and fecal characteristics, microbiota, and metabolites in dogs fed human-grade foods[4]
- True nutrient and amino acid digestibility of dog foods made with human-grade ingredients using the precision-fed cecectomized rooster assay[5]
- Comparison of mycotoxin concentrations in grain versus grain-free dry and wet commercial dog foods[6]
- Effects of fresh prepared, whole food canine maintenance diets on clinically measurable blood parameters in healthy dogs[7]
Products
The company's fresh dog food line includes Fresh Frozen, Pantry Fresh, JustFresh.[1] They also sell soft chew health supplements and single- and limited-ingredient dog treats. They also offer prescription diets and custom dog food for pets with special needs. All products are free from artificial preservatives.
Programs
JustFoodforDogs began The Adoption Project in 2021 to partner with animal welfare organizations by donating fresh meals to rescue dogs in their care. Their rescue partners include Wags & Walks, Korean K9 Rescue, Muttville, Thrive Animal Rescue, Pug Nation Rescue, K9 Kismet, Paws Chicago, and Unconditional Senior & Special Needs Dog Rescue.
