Dr. K.K. Gopinathan (born 1 October 1949), also published as **Kannoly Karunakaran Gopinathan** and sometimes rendered **K.K. Gopinath**, is an Indian obstetrician and gynaecologist based in Kerala. He has authored and co-authored multiple peer-reviewed medical papers on prenatal diagnosis, assisted reproduction and obstetric practice, including observational studies on ICSI outcomes,[1] and case reports involving congenital heart defects detected via ultrasound.[2] He has also contributed to prenatal diagnosis literature,[3][4] and assisted reproduction research.[5] He has also appeared in regional media coverage of clinical cases at his hospital.[6][7]

Early life and education

Gopinathan was born in Kerala and trained in medicine at Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College, Belgaum (MBBS, 1974). He completed postgraduate training in obstetrics and gynaecology at the University of Kerala.

Career

Gopinathan co-founded Edappal Hospitals (Edappal, Kerala) and established the Centre for Infertility Management and Assisted Reproduction (CIMAR), where he practised as an obstetrician and infertility specialist. Regional news coverage has reported on clinical cases managed at his hospital, including a rare delivery of a three-foot-tall woman in Malappuram in 2025,[6] and other infertility and obstetric cases reported in local press.[7]

Research

Gopinathan’s publications include work on:

  • **Infertility and ovarian reserve:** a study on the correlation of age and antimüllerian hormone in assisted reproduction.[5]
  • **Prenatal diagnosis and congenital anomalies:** articles on ectrodactyly,[8] congenital malformations,[3] and segmental defects detected prenatally.[4]
  • **Ultrasound in obstetrics:** contributions in the *Journal of Clinical Ultrasound*.[9]
  • **Clinical scoring systems for assisted reproduction:** description of a “Fertility Scoring Index” developed at CIMAR.[10]
  • **Recent PubMed-indexed studies** authored or co-authored by Gopinathan are available under PMID 34759618 and PMID 33314158.[1][2]

Media coverage

In addition to journal publications, Gopinathan has been cited in mainstream media. In August 2025, *Onmanorama* covered a rare obstetric case at Edappal Hospital involving a woman of very short stature giving birth,[6] and *Kerala Kaumudi* has reported on the hospital’s infertility and obstetric services.[7]
