History
2009-2010; Formation & Debut
Bad Gyal Entertainment had just debuted their girl group “PinkA” in 2008. It was announced on April 4th, 2010, that a new girl group was going to debut as “KANA”. Officially on July 3rd, 2009, they debuted with “Huh”. Two months after “Huh”, they came back with their 1st mini album “KANA GIRLS”, which sold over 200k copies in the first week.
2011-2013; Debut Japanese Album, Debut Korean Album Comeback, First Subunit
In 2011, they debuted their first subunit with members Hara & Hyolyn, “KANA19”. They officially debuted on July 14, 2011, with “Hot Summer”.
In 2011, it was rumored that KANA was coming back with a debut album. The rumors became true after it was confirmed by their label manager that they would make an official comeback on July 14th, 2011, with the title track “Don’t Stop The Music”. Their debut album, titled “KANA”, dropped on November 12, 2011, and was their best-selling album to date, with 300k copies sold.
A month before their official Japan debut, they signed with the Japanese label “Starfish Entertainment”. The label is home to the famous girl group “SOULGIRLS”.
On November 24, 2011, KANA released their debut Japanese album “KANASIA”. They officially had their first Japanese tour and were very successful in Japan.
2012 came around and they came back with “Bad Girl Good Girl” & “Alone” on April 22, 2012; those songs were very big hits.
Also in 2012, they came back to Japan and released not one but two Japanese albums.
2013-2015; Biggest Hit, Subunit, Hara Scandal, Sophomore Album, Named “Girls of Japan”, HARA’s Removal, New Member
In the summer of 2013, members from KANA, HARA & Hyolyn, and members from SOULGIRLS, IC & MIRYO formed a subunit that promoted in Japan, “Girls-N4”. They debuted with the song “全員日記“.
In 2013, they released their biggest hit, 「Ryusei」. It was huge in Japan around 2013-2014. They released a Korean version in 2014 for the Korean fans to understand.
A scandal broke out about two female idols who were being investigated for possession of drugs. The female idols were soloist NS-Somin & HARA of KANA. After the scandal broke out, HARA was on indefinite hiatus from the group until further notice.
They came back as a three-member group with “Mr. Mr.”. A month after they came back, they restarted Japanese activities and released a Japanese version of their 2013 hit “Electric Shock”. On August 19, 2014, they dropped “Give It To Me” with hits “Give It To Me” & “Falling In Love”. They also had another hit that was a ballad, “Not Around Any Longer”.
They also released a Japanese album titled KANA WORLD.
On August 25, 2014, they dropped their “Touch My Body”. It was one of their biggest hits, selling over 2 million downloads.
As of October 14, 2014, HARA was removed from the group, and her contract with the group had been terminated.
Jiwong was shortly added to the group as a replacement member and participated in the next comeback, “Cupid”, at the end of 2014.
2015; Group Hiatus, Subunit Disbanded
It was announced that in 2015, the subunit “KANA19” was disbanded after the contract termination of HARA, leaving only one member left in the subunit.
On December 27, 2014, they announced their hiatus after their Kawasaki performance.
2016-2019; Hara’s Departure from the label, Insane Love, New Japanese Activities, Why So Lonely, Mysterious, I’ll Be Yours, Members Leaving, Indefinite Hiatus
Former member Hara was announced in late 2015 that she had left Bad Gyal Entertainment.
After two years with no music activity, the girls came back with the mini album “Insane Love” with the single “Ring The Alarm”. After three months, they came back with “Why So Lonely”. After a year of hiatus, they dropped “Mysterious” & “I’ll Be Yours”.
In late 2016, they came back to Japan and released the comeback single “Catch Me If You Can” and released their new Japanese album “ACE OF ANGELS”.
In 2018, members Hana & Ryunji decided not to renew their contracts with Bad Gyal Entertainment. A month later, Jiwong left the group after not renewing her contract with Bad Gyal Entertainment.
Hana’s & Ryunji’s departure were never made official; only Jiwong’s was made official. Hyolyn was the only active member in the label.
