KASPR Datahaus PTY LTD, is an alternative data company located in Melbourne, Australia. The company remotely scans and collects Internet activity and quality data in real time at every location in the world.[1]
History[edit]
The company was founded in 2018 by Klaus Ackermann, Simon Angus and Paul Raschky as a commercial spin-off from Monash University.[2] Ackermann, Angus, and Raschky worked together on a research project on the use of large amounts of online/offline activity of the entire internet to infer human behaviour.[3][4] Based on this research, they have developed a method[5] to scan, aggregate, analyse and visualise the number and latency of very large numbers of internet-connected Internet Protocol addresses at a given location and time which build the foundation for the technology used by KASPR Datahaus. In 2020, KASPR Datahaus entered into a redistribution agreement with Bloomberg LP to make its Global ICT Intel Daily Data products available via the Bloomberg Enterprise Access Point.[6] In 2021, KASPR was part of the winter cohort of the D.Start Ignite program delivered by the Australian Department of Defence and CSIRO.[7]
Technology[edit]
KASPR's technology remotely scans over 450 million online fixed internet end-points and collects around 3.5 billion measurements every day, worldwide. The data is then aggregated at various spatial units (grid cells, city, county/district, state level) to provide close to real-time measures of internet activity and quality. Applications include alternative data for the investment industry[8], parametric insurance against internet downtime and shutdowns[9], detection of internet congestion and areas with bad internet service.[10]
Impact and Recognition[edit]
KASPR Datahaus' technology is used by its' not-for-profit research platform[11], the Monash IP Observatory, which is part of a global network or organisations that monitor free access to the internet and compile information on government mandated disruptions and shutdowns.[12][13] At the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, KASPR data[14] was used to measure the impact of mandated lockdowns and remote working on internet infrastructure[15] and how real-time internet data can be used to infer the impact of COVID-19 on society[16][17]. The company's data was used to predict COVID-19 cases in Iran[18], measure COVID-19 related changes to internet behavior in Colombia[19] and Malaysia[20], and reveal how the compliance to UK lockdown measures have faltered over time[21][22]. In 2021, KASPR Datahaus and the Monash IP Observatory have helped to document the systematic, daily shutdowns of Myanmar's internet during the 2021 Myanmar coup[23][24]. Since the beginning of the Russian invasion of Ukraine KASPR technology has been used to monitor in real time the impact of the conflict on Ukraine's internet infrastructure[25][26] as well as government interventions on the Russian internet.[27] In 2021, KASPR Datahaus was included in the list of the "Best Australian Big-Data Start-ups "[28] and the "Most Innovative Data Visualization Startups in Victoria"[29] by Data Magazine.
