Kevin Micheal Gulley (March 21, 1969 - July 7, 2012) commonly known as his stage name KMG or KMG the Illustrator, was an American Rapper/Producer. Gulley founded Above the Law in 1989 with Big Hutch and DJ Total K-Oss. They were signed to a variety of labels including Ruthless Records, Death Row Records and Tommy Boy Records.[1][2][3][4]

Career

He began his musical career with Above the Law (A.T.L), who signed to Ruthless Records in 1989, where he started producing and helped production on A.T.L's debut album Livin' Like Hustlers, which released in 1990 a year after they were signed. He met people such as Kokane, MC Ren and Eazy-E who he also worked with in later projects of theirs and his. During his time on Ruthless Records, he worked with other artists at that time also known as Tupac shauker and a few others while also producing some of A.T.L's notable songs like "Murder Rap" and "Black Superman". Gulley was featured on several of Kokane’s albums, including 2012’s mixtape Dr. Kokastien. Gulley also had strained relationships with Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg.[5][6][2][3][4] [citation needed][clarification needed][why?]

Death

Gulley died on the July 7, 2012 in Los Angeles. Kokane stated on his twitter that Gulley had passed away that morning. Rap peers including MC Ren, Ice-T and Warren G paid tribute, while Kokane said of his passing posted on twitter (X) “1 of the greatest MCz on da West has passed! My heart hurt so bad! On my life, I will keep his legacy Alive!! I’ll miss U forever... RIP KMG.”[1][3][2]
